Golden Nuggets for 10.24.08
It's Purdue week, and I'm here to say that a win Saturday is a step towards a Rose Bowl berth.
Acutally, I'm here to relay that. From the an AP Big Ten notebook:
Let’s say three teams tie for the Big Ten title with 7-1 records. Team A’s only loss came to Team B, which also has a nonconference loss. Team C beat Team B and didn’t play Team A, but lost to another conference team.
The result: Minnesota going to the Rose Bowl to play Southern California.
Under the scenario listed above, which is not that far fetched. Minnesota’s only loss so far came at Ohio State. If the Gophers win out and the Buckeyes lose to Penn State, but the Nittany Lions are then upset by Iowa or Indiana, Minnesota would be the big winner.
According to the Big Ten tiebreaker, Ohio State would drop out because it had the worst overall record with two losses. Since Minnesota and Penn State did not meet, and no other tiebreaker applies, the conference’s Bowl Championship Series representative would be determined by which team had last won the conference’s automatic BCS berth. Penn State represented the conference in 2005.
And that’s how the Golden Gophers can get to go to the Golden State.
Despite what our friends from Iowa might say, the Gophers CAN run the table down the stretch. The only portion of the above scenario that I think is questionable is Penn State losing a conference game if it's not beaten this week at Columbus. But, there's also the possibility that Penn State could catapult into a BCS title game.
A Rose Bowl berth isn't likely at this point. But it's possible. And that's just another large reason why we should be glued to our seats Saturday to watch Tim Brewster and company take on Purdue.
- Will Big Ten road teams go 5-0 this weekend? It's a question this article looks at. Minnesota is the only road underdog, and that is a questionable one-point edge for Purdue. Other potential road winners: Illinois at Wisconsin, Northwestern at Indiana, Michigan State at Michigan and Penn State at Ohio State.
- TheHeismanRace.com writes that Purdue's is a "Season on the Brink" at this point and predicts a Minnesota win Saturday.
- A top-25 ranking means the Gophers get into a whole lot more weekend previews. Here in the USA Today, the Gophers are predicted to be a 24-20 winner Saturday.
- Finally, there's a link on the left sidebar to The Landry Hat. It's a Dallas Cowboys blog run by a former colleague of mine. Little did I know that my old friend has completely jumped the shark. Am I overreacting in thinking about removing his link? In this video blog he dons a wrestling mask and uses a sock puppet to bash the Cowboys. And in this inagural video blog, he dons the same mask and begs Bill Cowher to coach the Cowboys.

Typical Day @ Purdue
This article really has nothing to do with the Gophers but as I was going to the Purdue sites I found this. It’s really quite funny and well done article ripping on a number of Purdue topics – http://www.boiledsports.com/2008/10/typical-day-for-purdue-football.html
Boiled Sports...
./…is usually pretty good.
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.
"Usually"?
usually, PJS??
Psshaww.
[insert prophetic yet obnoxiously haughty and annoying quote here]
Oh, also...
I’m honestly shocked that Purdue is favored by anything this weekend. Last win was a mid-September squeaker over Central Michigan… without it we’d be 1-6 with a win over a 1-AA program. Hoo-freaking-ray.

Purdue is at home ....
…. and the masses aren’t sure if they trust the Gophers yet.
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.
It's really hard for you to fathom Minnesota football ...
… is emerging as a Big Ten power isn’t it. Especially while overpaid Ferentz drives Iowa football into ineptitude.
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.
It's not that.
Winning 2 games is like syrup for them. They get all antsy in their pantsies.

Can't wait for Nov. 22
when the Gophs pound the Hawkeyes. HS keeps ripping the Gophs as a team that hasn’t played anybody and is basically the same team as last year in which he called the Gophs a cupcake (which they were). Too bad that cupcake team that won one game last year (only lost to Iowa by 5 points in Iowa) is now 6-1 and playing with tons of confidence. Floyd will look really good in the new trophy case of TCF Bank Stadium!
That tiebreaker scenario isn’t accurate. Since Minnesota and Ohio State would have played each other, overall record isn’t taken into account until after Big Ten record AND head-to-head result.
Be Honest
…would you REALLY want to see us play USC this season? I would not. It would be like watching my son get his ass kicked by the bully in school. Errr…paying thousands of dollars to watch my son get his ass kicked by the bully in school!
Let’s build something here. This is not the team we want to make a big bowl game only to get crushed and further embarrass the Big 10 in big bowl games. Mid-tier bowl game, build momentum, and get a better team for next year and the following year when Weber is a senior and we’ve got three teams that are Brewster’s teams. THAT is the team I want taking on USC in Pasadena….or wherever the BCS Championship game is!
wouldn't really matter
I may sound like Sid, but the biggest benefit of making a bowl would be an extra month of practice for this super young team. This isn’t that great of a benefit every time but when your team is so young getting to practice in December will be a huge benefit for the talented freshmen class.
Who we play really doesn’t make a difference. Look at Illinois, they were dismantled by USC last year and their reputation or expectations for this year were not tarnished.
what you say here can, and will, be used against you
Depends on who the PSU loss is to
If Michigan State is the team that beats PSU and wins out in the process (fairly likely, if they beat PSU – the other games are Wisconsin and Purdue, both at home – but not at all likely that they’ll actually beat PSU), they’d be in the tie as well – and by virtue of not having played any 1-AA teams (I’m not kidding, that’s actually the tiebreaker after head-to-head) they would be the Rose Bowl representative. You would have to either have Iowa or Indiana beat PSU, or MSU beat them but lose to Wisconsin or Purdue first. (You would also have to win out, which is possible but somewhat unlikely – NW, Wisconsin, and Iowa are all toss-ups.)
