Spry Suspended
Kent Youngblood of the Strib with the report
Greetings from West Lafayette.
The Gophers just announced that receiver Ralph Spry won’t be with the team today. He’ll miss next week’s game, too.
”Ralph Spry has been suspended from the team for two weeks, due to a violation of team rules,” Gophers coach Tim Brewster said in a team press release. “We’ll re-evaluate the situation in two weeks.”
Spry, a sophomore from Auburn, Ala., had started all seven of the Gophers’ games, compiling just seven catches with two fumbles. I’m told freshman Brandon Green will replace Spry in the starting lineup.
It’s not clear what Spry was suspended.
Spry had just 63 yards’ worth of receptions, and he had fumbled twice after making receptions, including a fumble at Illinois that could have been costly.
Green will now get his first start, something many fans expected would come earlier after the high-profile recruit signed on with the Gophers.
Meanwhile, it’s cold and overcast here at Ross-Ade Stadium. There is a chance for rain. The Gophers spent some time this week practicing outside in the raid to be ready for that possibility.
I’ll check back with you later if more comes up. Have fun watching the game.
Brewster will have no further comment on the matter.

Interesting development
I’m sure in the coming days we’ll find out what the issue is. With the suspension being two weeks my initial reaction is that is must be something more significant than being late for a meeting and less than getting arrested. But that of course is just speculation.
Now we’ll get to see a heavier dose of Brandon Green and maybe Stoudermire / Pittman.
what you say here can, and will, be used against you
Good work!
What are your thoughts on Spry? I just don’t see him getting comfortable with college football. Maybe it’s his huge shoulder pads and loose jersey that makes him look like me in 1992 high school football? This suspension should be punishment for not covering the ball in the middle of the field against Illinois, which could have cost us the game. I kid, I kid….
I’m on the fence with Spry. Can’t figure out what his role is or should be, if we keep bringing in athletes. I see him as the odd man out? Agree? Disagree?
Also, Brewster seems like a guy to me who will hold a grudge. If you mess up, and he has another alternative, you’re pining on the bench. And he’ll never forget you broke rules. That’s not to say he won’t forgive….but he’ll never forget. I like that.
Worked out well
Overall, Green played very well.
