ACC/Big Ten Challenge Game Thread: UVA at Minnesota

Virginia Cavaliers at Minnesota Golden Gophers, Dec 2, 2008 8:30 PM CST

If you haven't been here today, GN did a preview of the game below. I did a Q&A with a UVA blogger about the matchup. We'll see soon how the Gophers compare with major conference competition. I can't wait. Join us for a chat tonight as the Gophers (hopefully) help the Big Ten win the challenge.

The Hawkeyes just lost be two after former Minnesota recruit Andrew Brommer missed two free throws with less than a second left. Feel bad for him. As a kid that happened to me. It was awful.

what?

he just took a shot at the first place vikings?

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 8:49 PM CST reply actions

the thing is...

…it really shouldn’t be with the twin towers and johnson on the squad. I don’t think we are doing particularly bad, I just think UVA is doing a good job of positioning.

again

Gophers just don’t look like they have any rhythm on either end of the floor…like it is the first time they have all played together. Just an observation.

We're painful with our half court offense.

If we’re not scoring in transition, it’s ugly.

I don't think we have a half-court identity.

No real inside scoring. No real slashers. UK fans always criticized Tubby’s “complicated” halff court offnese. I think that’s BS, but….

how many...

…traveling calls is that on UVA now?

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 8:57 PM CST reply actions

seriously

next year is going to be sweet with dj, iverson, sampson, nolen, williams, white, westbrook, hoffarber

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

damn

almost a three point play opportunity

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 9:02 PM CST reply actions

I wish I had DVR ....

… Did they run Hoffarber off of 2 screens there?

i was typing...

how we need hoffarber when he hit is second…didn’t see if it was off a screen

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 9:04 PM CST reply actions

nice pass

it surprised him, but it worked out that time

I'm not a fan of Abu-Shamala and Busch on the floor at the same time...

Especially combined with two first year guards.

I'm not a fan

of Abu-Shamala on the floor at any time!

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

by GopherNation on Dec 2, 2008 9:19 PM CST reply actions

I'm not happy

with our shot selection right now

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 9:20 PM CST reply actions

So ....

… Momentum going into halftime is important, IMO. We probably have it, but we had an 8 point lead with about 5 minutes left in the half when Tubby went to the entire second group. I thought we kept that group out there too long. To me Busch is a role player, not a regular. We should be up 6-10 if Tubby was playing with a shorter bench.

I reiterate

my Josh Smith comparison of DJ

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 9:48 PM CST reply actions

I love it when a player, in this case DJ, stops thinking and just plays.

That drive was pure instinct. Just what he’d do in practice or a pick-up game.

i saw WKU

last year win two games in tampa…they are good…they should be ranked now

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 10:13 PM CST reply actions

although...

i guess a 28 point loss to murray state will keep them from the top 25

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 10:15 PM CST reply actions

… Joseph comes through there.

good stuff

Nice win for the Rodents.

by rencito on Dec 2, 2008 10:34 PM CST reply actions

I have an exam tomorrow that I haven't started studying for so I'll be brief...

Damian Johnson is awesome and our first teams defense is completely ridiculous.

by Felix on Dec 2, 2008 11:11 PM CST reply actions

Oh, and..

our second team really needs to improve all around. Tubby needs to stop this 5 in and 5 out stuff, there is a huge difference in the two groups abilities right now.
