Jake Deitchler

Read an article in the Pioneer Press today on U wrestling recruit Jake Deitchler indicating that he might not come to the 'U':

http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_10195477

The Star Tribune made no mention of the possibility that Deitchler might forgo his opportunity to wrestle in college to focus on the Greco-Roman discipline in a long Rachel Blount article today, but it would seem like a legitimate possibility.  Any Gopher wrestling minds have any opinions on this?

interesting

I am not a wrestling mind but it would seem he would have been nice addition for 2008.

Colorado State

Looks like it’s Colorado State for Deitchler …

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.

No college, just olympics

Or…here PJS:

Deitchler is expected to be part of the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where he will prepare for the 2012 Greco-Roman Olympic team.

Hmm

I must have read it wrong, though the story is now update with J. Robinson having a tantrum:

Gophers wrestling coach J Robinson, who received a brief phone call from Deitchler today, was not happy about the decision.

“Basically, what you have is someone not honoring their commitment; it’s that simple,” Robinson said. “You hope people will do what they say they’re going to do. It’s disappointing, but we’ll go on.”

Robinson

He may be a successful, talented coach, but he is one petulant d-bag who treats kids like cattle.

Robinson

I think you’re totally off-base, neide:

Robinson makes a good point: The ‘U’ built their recruiting class around this kid, and for Deitchler to commit to the ‘U’ in the fall. Then to go talk to the New York Times & the Pioneer Press before talking to Robinson was either immature or classless … or both.

This situation didn’t come out of nowhere for Deitchler … he committed to coming to the U in the fall and had [almost] the entire summer to evaluate his Greco-Roman future after qualifying for the Games and before going to Beijing.

There are definitely some ethics issues in play here: is a kid like Deitchler compelled to some level of loyalty after signing an NLI? Is USA Wrestling burning bridges by cornering Deitchler when he’s away from the States? When USA Wrestling talks with Deitchler isn’t it kind of like hitting on a woman you know is married?

It's not new

This isn’t a one-time issue with Robinson. He has a history of d-baggery and using kids.

Expound?

neide, in the interest of educating those that don’t follow Robinson’s program closely can you expound on why you consider Robinson a d-bag? I personally plead ignorance because I don’t follow the progam all that closely.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.

it wasn't a blind side to the U

STrib reports that this was always known as a possibility. Obviously recruiting plans were designed around Deitchler but this happens all the time in other sports, they usually try to have a back up plan.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

Hmmmm....

I’m not sure this happens “a lot” in other sports. If anything, kids in other sports wriggle out of their NLIs to attend other schools. I would make the point that the most interesting aspect of this little story is the new precedents – if any – it sets.
