Gray officially out for 2008
From the AP:
Marqueis Gray, the highly recruited quarterback from Indianapolis, won't be playing with the Gophers this season because of an eligibility problem, Coach Tim Brewster said in a statement released Monday.
The University, which has known about the potential problem, has so far refused to specify what it is.
"We look forward to having Marqueis back with the Gopher football program soon," Brewster said, adding that the plan is for Gray to enroll at the U in the spring of 2009.

Thanks HL...
If Gray is indeed enrolled by spring of 2009, this headache won’t have tremendous impact, though it’d be nice for MarQueis to get himself eligible so he can learn under Weber, Dunbar and company.

Sure hope he makes it back to play for the Gophers. I really think he’s going to be good.

agreed, Fishing
I was thinking about his today, he has the tools to be the perfect fit in this system and thrive. It would be disappointing if ends up elsewhere. In 6 months we really need to see Reaves and Gray on campus.
what you say here can, and will, be used against you

you know
what the hell goes on with the Minnesota media that they don’t dig further into this story and find out what the problem is, and report on it.
UMN has had a huge problem since Mason was here and the guy left a standing stench of paranoia around the university.

let me
clarify that a little further.
I would say that one reason the media doesn’t dig further is that it’s easier for people like Pat Reusse to sit around on his ass and make fun of the program. He doesn’t have to do any real work that way.

media
The MPLS/St. Paul media must feel the way to survive in a dying industry is to simply not do any investigative journalism. Sad, really, and one reason their circulatons and staffs are shrinking.

Dennis Brackin
If you go back a week or so when this first broke, Daily Gopher had an article in which Dennis Brackin (sports editor at Star Tribune) said he had the ACT scores from the Gophers team in his hands for a month before releasing them.
Why? He was waiting for a member of this heralded class to fail. They did, so he went to action.
Investigation happens, just sometimes you don’t see it because there is nothing to it or you can’t prove something. If you’re wrong, you’re going to get sued. We’re losing jobs each year in the newsroom…it takes a lot of man hours for an investigation like the Gangelhoof/Haskins one.

One more thing
Speaking of Nebraska journalism…where was the investigation into Paul Donahue before he was dismissed? His male modeling wasn’t the first time he got into trouble….but he was a NCAA champion I guess.
It happens everywhere.

mpls media
My larger beef is I believe the MPLS/St. Paul media largely ignores the Gophers.

Kind of like the MPLS/St. Paul general population! ;)
But I get your point.

Hockey and Basketball
Gophers hockey is a tremendous draw as far as the genearl population is concerned. Some lackluster interest in men’s hoops was to be expected after Ganglehoff-gate. But with Tubby here now, the Gophers will overtake the Timberpuppies as far as fan interst is concerned. And the media will jump on the bandwagon.

the opposite
end of the spectrum. I would say that Nebraska’s media doesn’t release or won’t print stuff sometimes because they’re overly protective of the Husker program. And possibly because their readership would kill them.
I won’t debate that newspapers are getting killed, but in the case of the Strib, I honestly believe it’s because they’re a crappy newspaper. We get it on the weekends because Mrs. Corn Nation wants the ads, otherwise, I haven’t subscribed to it for years. I won’t get into the reasons for it because they go beyond sports.
But it gauls me that Reusse complains that when newspapers are gone, who will do the investigating when all the guy does is write articles that tear everything apart.

Remember that the cities have four professional sports and a few others like the Lynx, Thunder and Swarm. Honestly, the U of M sits behind the Vikings, Twins and Wild in importance to a majority of readers.
I think Chip did an alright job last year with football; Myron was horrible with basketball; Roman did a fantastic job in his first year covering hockey. There is always going to be more to cover – that’s why we come here.
