The Daily Gopher Fix 9.3.08
One of Tim Brewster's obvious challenges is to keep Minnesota-bred talent home. One overlooked former Minnesota recruit is being heralded as one of Nebraska's most successful wide receivers ever.
As Corn Nation reports, Nate Swift grabbed five balls for 121 yards and two scores this past weekend against Western Michigan to put him fourth in Nebraska history in receptions (108), fourth in touchdowns (14) and tied with Irving Fryar for second in 100 yard games with five. A Hutchinson High School grad, Swift wasn't heavily recuruited.
He'd look awfully nice now lining up alongside Eric Decker.
- Duane Bennett is getting his just deserts for his game-saving run against Northern Illinois.
- The Minnesota Daily reports that women's basketball coach Pam Borton has inked a 6-year contract extension.
- The Daily also reports that season ticket sales for Minnesota football are up 5 percent this year.
- If you enjoyed watching the Big Ten Network's "The Journey" on Minnesota basketball with Tubby Smith last year, you can now own it on DVD. This was an OK way to waste a half hour or so, but I wouldn't recommend shelling out your money.
- Royce White will visit The U this weekend along with Chicago-area point guard Darius Miller Smith. White has already committed to attend Minnesota.

Darius Smith (Not Miller)
Miller is a freshman at UK.
Darius Smith is Top 100 rated PG from here in Chicago and noted for his defensive process. He would be a Good Get for The U and I think Minnesota will get him. We’ll C.
I want Miller, I mean Smith
My #1 PG I want to see commit is Eric Bledsoe, but right behind him is Smith.
what you say here can, and will, be used against you
Swift
wouldn’t he look good now opposite Decker?
what you say here can, and will, be used against you
Swift
I lived in St. Paul when Swift was rushing for 2,500 yards and numerous touchdowns, helping Hutchinson (which also had Tony Mortensen and Cornhusker lineman Lydon Murtha) to a Prep Bowl loss to Totino-Grace. I do remember not many D1 schools looking at him. I don’t even think the Gophs offered him a scholarship despite them trying desperately to get Murtha. Murtha eventually signed, but then rescinded and went with Nebraska with Swift.
Nate has solid career numbers because he is a four-year starter. He played a ton as a freshman. Last year, he was lost behind Maurice Purify and Terrance Nunn, which was kind of a surprise since he’s up there for career receptions. I’d expect big things from him.
But, yes, he would have looked good in Maroon and Gold. A Logan Payne type.
Darius Smith
