The Gophers have offered their

Offensive Coordinator to Josh Huepel, Quarterbacks Coach for Oklahoma, and Former OU QB according to soonerscoop.com.  Not Bad Stats on Huepel as QB coach. In his 1st year as QB Coach he went 11-3 with QB Paul Thompson and in the past two years is 23-5 with QB Sam Bradford.

I like that news....

…but, um, has anyone watched Oklahoma’s offense this year? Full-fledged spread, hurry-up offense. Throwing the ball all over the place.

Would a Heupel hire mesh well with Davis as the “running game” coach, and Brewster’s desire for a more robust rushing offense?

And I hate to be pessimistic here, but Heupel undoubtedly is an up and comer who would jump to a better position the chance he gets it, particularly in the Big 12. If we have a good season we’ll be looking for a good OC again next year.

See, and that’s Brewster’s quandry. Until we start consistently winning and/or exponentially increasing the amount we’re paying our coordinators, we won’t be able to lure top-notch, established coaches. That leaves us with up and comers or retreads who might need to rebuild a reputation. You hire an up and comer, and we need to worry about a) inexperience and b) dealing with the fact that success will mean we’ll be looking for a new up and comer in a year or two. Hire a retread and everyone focuses on the bloke’s failure and assumes we’re screwed.

I just get the sense from people that unless we hire Norm Chow and Tony Dungy for OC/DC, respectively, the team is effed in some respect and I just don’t believe that to be the case.

So what's it gonna be?????

Wide open spread with lots of throws, or old time Big Ten “Three Yards and a cloud of dust” football? Inquiring minds want to know! LOL

Brewster's response would likely be ....

… “yes.”

And, “it’s tremendous.”

And finally, “I love football.”

Definitely Spread

I’m not sure why people are focusing so much on Davis. I think Davis is only there to help out the offensive line and work on short yardage situations. I think we will become even more spread next year—but be able to grind out those short yardage situations better than we did this past year.

That's what I'm hoping for.

When the squad came out in the bowl game and ran every play from under center for the first few drives, I said to myself, this isn’t going to work either. Then I said to Casie, one of the lovelies that Lloyd and I met at our local watering hole, “why don’t you go get us a few beers”. While she was off getting Lloyd and I a cold one, I told Lloyd that scheme I would like to see come 2009 would utilize a 44-56% mix of under-center vs. spread formations. I like the spread and think that with continued improved recruiting the O can be one of the best in the Big Ten. But, we NEED to be able to line up and smash out a 2 yard gain on 3rd down when necessary.

By the time Casie go back to our seats with 4 cold brews, the game was taking a turn of for the worse. We suffered through the rest of the game and then headed back to The Library. It was a great place to pick up hosts for our week in Tempe, but not really our scene. The ladies were more than happy to show us their favorite dive bar – a joint called Monkey Pants, and we spent the remainder of the night there before returning to Leslie’s place (the other half of our host team). It was really Leslie’s folk’s house, but they were on vacation for the month. After one night in our hotel, we managed to receive a gracious invitation to spend the rest of our time at her place and Lloyd and had and extra $350 to spend on liquor. It was definitely a top 5 road trip.

That being said, I hope the new OC recognized the need to run the ball behind a physical O-Line. Also, I hope we can find some physical O-Linemen.

Quandry

The “quandry” outlined by Rooney09 for Brewster’s mindset in hiring coordinators is not unlike the one facing Joel Maturi and administration with Brewster’s job. If Brewster polishes off the 2008 season 10-2, maybe his name gets a little more play with the Tennessee job or with another job of note.

As a Gopher fan, I suppose I’d lean towards preference in the Huepel’s of the world over the Cosgrove’s. In the long haul, I think it would be good for the reputation of the program to be known as a breeding ground of sorts for great coaches. Even if we’re simply viewed by the collegiate coaching fraternity as a “step” on the ladder, it seems to be a better reputation than that of a wasteland or college football exile.

I think you all are right....

….in that sense we’re like Northwestern. Now, we just need to find our own Pat Fitzgerald in order to stop the “breeding ground” reputation at some point. Here’s hoping Willie Van De Steeg comes back in ten years to lead the program.

I still think...

Dungy will be here some day…especially if Brewster gets the program to the next level (the level above where it was before Mason left).

Dungy WONT be here

Read Dungy’s book. His wife hates the cold and they’ve established pretty strong roots in Tampa. Unless he ends up not married anymore, I doubt very much Tony Dungy will ever be coaching in Minnesota for either the Vikings, Gophers, or Vixens.

Maybe it is just wishful thinking

Looks like he is retiring from the Colts today. He very possibly could be one of those guys that can just leave football and not give it a second thought. There are a lot of guys who can’t leave as easily (Favre, JoePa). Dungy very well may be different.

Not gonna be Heupel?

The Star Tribune suggests today that Heupel will not be the OC next year. Maybe in the OC, but not the OC for Minnesota…..
