GameThread: Illinois at Minnesota
Illinois Fighting Illini at Minnesota Golden Gophers, Jan 29, 2009 8:00 PM CST
The latest, greatest, biggest game of the year is upon us. The Gophers have a chance tonight for another win that the talking heads can point to come March.
More importantly, the Gophers need to begin to create an aura on their home court. Purdue came in and pushed the Gophers around. Granted, Purdue is a more tested and superior team. OK, fine. But if the Gophers are going to turn this season into something relatively special (a win or two in the tournament) they need to start beating equal or slightly superior teams on their home floor.
Something tells me the Gophers have a slight chip on their shoulder and will come out poised and focused tonight. Let's hope so.
See you below.

Hey, it’s not Spencer Tollackson!

Need to put some springs in Iverson's sneakers. Needs to dunk these looks.
hoopraker: the rakes offer some takes on big ten basketball
that's what i was thinking.
by the time he’s a junior, he’ll be throwing those down.

Yes, bringing in JAS for Colton was an interesting decision!

he's coming back in but a good observation
hoopraker: the rakes offer some takes on big ten basketball
yes he scares me.
and does anyone know his recruiting story? He committed to UK for Billy G. When he wanted a transfer, I suggested somewhere maybe he’d come to Tubby. But I was told that was not going to happen.

long story. was an Amaker recruit. decommitted and then recommitted to michigan. tommy got fired. off to kentucky
pass him the ball and you don’t get it back (most of the time)

That'll get Bostick back to the bench. Sloppy entry passes.

tough illinois defense on that possession
up six but you’d like to be burying them with how Illinois is shooting

I 'm not a fan of going to the znoe. Why fix a defense that wasn't broken?

What happened to getting the ball inside?
We’ve stopped doing that and our offense has went south.

Rencito's 83-58 score prediction isn't looking too good
22-16 at the half… is this a womens bball game?
good first half
Great defense, but I think we will regret not stretching out the lead when we had the chance
I think the uglier this game is the better it is for us.
Maroon and Gold Headquarters: The Daily Gopher
Our intensity level is up
Plus we are driving and pushing the ball inside one way or another much more than we have the past few games. We are getting inside shots, drawing fouls, and getting tough boards instead of settling for long jump shots. So far so good.
i have a feeling both teams will shoot better this half.
Yup.
His enthusiasm is great. And he’s potentially only seconds away from saying something mind-numbingly stupid.

Why...
did Hampton change the audio on the kid who shoots the ball of the roof? I thought it was way better when the voice was all high pitched and cracking like a 12 year old.
This is what happens
When there are two commercial breaks that close together. I start talking about commercials.
Audrina = not bad
You should stick around though. Only Gopher blog named to the learning center’s top 100 college sports blogs.

Where are the owners of this site?
I’ve seen no comments from either of those clowns since I showed up
I've yet to see a crossover.
Or breakdown a defender. But that’s really about it.

god damn blogger
I’m trying to put a poll for a new Sampson nickname and it keeps erroring out on me. Could be user error, I’m quite drunk, but shouldn’t it be easier for drunks to make polls? I thought Obama was president.
you shouldn't judge people
the bible says so

Not only that, but...
you can drink if you can still remember Rico Tucker. In fact, I’d suggest drinking until you can’t remember Rico Tucker. Or Russ Archambeaux.

OMG, a Rush Archambeaux refernce.
And that had made me think of that guy from Iowa who used to drain from almost midcourt. Though I can’t remember his name.
Maroon and Gold Headquarters: The Daily Gopher
Are we badmouthing Rico up in here?
Clearly none of you people get it.

Rebounds
We are doing a great job so far. Not just total rebounds, but we also have 10 offensive boards. Illinois has 4. Hopefully that trend continues.
Our offense is in that spell again
lets not just waste the clock and throw up desperation shots guys!
Ralph nickname poll now up
go vote at DownwithGoldy.com. Also you should probably read that killer site instead of this garbage over here
The Gophers have hit 50
At half time, I wasn’t sure this was going to happen. Can we keep the Illini under 50?
What tremendous defense tonight.
One UK team was dubbed the Suffocats. If this performance keeps up, we’ll need something on that front.
Maroon and Gold Headquarters: The Daily Gopher
great perimeter defense killed Illinois from the get go
hoopraker: the rakes offer some takes on big ten basketball
Wow. I really didn't think we'd hold this team under 40!
Maroon and Gold Headquarters: The Daily Gopher
Unbelievable
i’m shocked. We are winning this pulling away in a big way.
This is a huge win for many different reasons:
1.) 6-3 is a great record halfway through the conference schedule
2.) With the next two games on the road at MSU and OSU, this takes pressure off of us
3.) A win over illinois solidifies a NCAA berth unless we fall flat on our faces
4.) A good old fashioned statement game
5.) The streak is over for Illinois
Couldn't agree more
Why would you want to say that the team you just beat is overrated? Don’t we want to prove that we are good by beating good opponents?
I used to like the right, left, right, left, right, left sit down thing, but it's a little old. we need something new.
Maroon and Gold Headquarters: The Daily Gopher
That's definitely still awesome
My favorite is still the one in my signature. Nothing beats it in my eyes.

Same
my best so far is 6 straight. still is kind of fun to play.

streak for the cash? sounds like something SBN should hijack and steal from the 4-letter.
Maroon and Gold Headquarters: The Daily Gopher
according to the Media Guide
This was the lowest total we have ever held a Big Ten team. Second lowest of any opponent.
Great win
Holding any team to 36 points is impressive, regardless of how well they played. Great job by the bigs tonight too, especially on the offensive glass.
