GameThread: Illinois at Minnesota

Illinois Fighting Illini at Minnesota Golden Gophers, Jan 29, 2009 8:00 PM CST

The latest, greatest, biggest game of the year is upon us. The Gophers have a chance tonight for another win that the talking heads can point to come March.

More importantly, the Gophers need to begin to create an aura on their home court. Purdue came in and pushed the Gophers around. Granted, Purdue is a more tested and superior team. OK, fine. But if the Gophers are going to turn this season into something relatively special (a win or two in the tournament) they need to start beating equal or slightly superior teams on their home floor.

Something tells me the Gophers have a slight chip on their shoulder and will come out poised and focused tonight. Let's hope so.

See you below.

yes he scares me.

and does anyone know his recruiting story? He committed to UK for Billy G. When he wanted a transfer, I suggested somewhere maybe he’d come to Tubby. But I was told that was not going to happen.

What happened to getting the ball inside?

We’ve stopped doing that and our offense has went south.

Sorry for the lag

Three hot Mormon chicks just stopped in to give me their story.

by GreasyLlama on Jan 29, 2009 8:48 PM CST reply actions

good first half

Great defense, but I think we will regret not stretching out the lead when we had the chance

by duckman86 on Jan 29, 2009 8:50 PM CST reply actions

Our intensity level is up

Plus we are driving and pushing the ball inside one way or another much more than we have the past few games. We are getting inside shots, drawing fouls, and getting tough boards instead of settling for long jump shots. So far so good.

i have a feeling both teams will shoot better this half.

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:07 PM CST reply actions

nice pass

iverson has to finish or make free throws

by duckman86 on Jan 29, 2009 9:09 PM CST reply actions

we are looking good

we need to win with defense and effort

by duckman86 on Jan 29, 2009 9:12 PM CST reply actions

BTW

who is the analyst with Gus Johnson?

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:12 PM CST reply actions

Yup.

His enthusiasm is great. And he’s potentially only seconds away from saying something mind-numbingly stupid.

by WhiteSpeedReceiver on Jan 29, 2009 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

Why...

did Hampton change the audio on the kid who shoots the ball of the roof? I thought it was way better when the voice was all high pitched and cracking like a 12 year old.

Wow!!!

What a board by Sampson

went to your site

but got hung up on the photo of Audrina

by GreasyLlama on Jan 29, 2009 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

Audrina = not bad

You should stick around though. Only Gopher blog named to the learning center’s top 100 college sports blogs.

Good play by Sampson

Way to take it strong and draw the foul.

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:22 PM CST reply actions

Iverson should take lessons from RSIII

on how to shoot FTs. Sampson is outstanding.

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:22 PM CST reply actions

And then of course...

he misses one immediately after I type that.

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

High Arc = good

That’s what my dad always told me

by DownwithGoldy on Jan 29, 2009 9:25 PM CST reply actions

Davis and Tisdale have 4 points total

they average double digits each. Great defense down low

by duckman86 on Jan 29, 2009 9:26 PM CST reply actions

Big shot Westbrook!!!!

I like the killer instinct I’m seeing so far!

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:35 PM CST reply actions

god damn blogger

I’m trying to put a poll for a new Sampson nickname and it keeps erroring out on me. Could be user error, I’m quite drunk, but shouldn’t it be easier for drunks to make polls? I thought Obama was president.

by DownwithGoldy on Jan 29, 2009 9:36 PM CST reply actions

Not only that, but...

you can drink if you can still remember Rico Tucker. In fact, I’d suggest drinking until you can’t remember Rico Tucker. Or Russ Archambeaux.

by WhiteSpeedReceiver on Jan 29, 2009 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

OMG, a Rush Archambeaux refernce.

And that had made me think of that guy from Iowa who used to drain from almost midcourt. Though I can’t remember his name.

Rebounds

We are doing a great job so far. Not just total rebounds, but we also have 10 offensive boards. Illinois has 4. Hopefully that trend continues.

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:38 PM CST reply actions

Good timeout right there

I didn’t like the way things were starting to look.

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:41 PM CST reply actions

Our offense is in that spell again

lets not just waste the clock and throw up desperation shots guys!

by GreasyLlama on Jan 29, 2009 9:42 PM CST reply actions

Gus

I love it when he goes bananas.

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:44 PM CST reply actions

The Gophers have hit 50

At half time, I wasn’t sure this was going to happen. Can we keep the Illini under 50?

by GreasyLlama on Jan 29, 2009 9:45 PM CST reply actions

Wow!

what a pass from Nolen and Sampson with the slam!

by GreasyLlama on Jan 29, 2009 9:51 PM CST reply actions

Gophers by 21

who would have guessed it! The streak is over!

by GreasyLlama on Jan 29, 2009 9:52 PM CST reply actions

What tremendous defense tonight.

One UK team was dubbed the Suffocats. If this performance keeps up, we’ll need something on that front.

great perimeter defense killed Illinois from the get go

hoopraker: the rakes offer some takes on big ten basketball

by hoopraker on Jan 29, 2009 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

Unbelievable

i’m shocked. We are winning this pulling away in a big way.

This is a huge win for many different reasons:

1.) 6-3 is a great record halfway through the conference schedule
2.) With the next two games on the road at MSU and OSU, this takes pressure off of us
3.) A win over illinois solidifies a NCAA berth unless we fall flat on our faces
4.) A good old fashioned statement game
5.) The streak is over for Illinois

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:55 PM CST reply actions

Couldn't agree more

Why would you want to say that the team you just beat is overrated? Don’t we want to prove that we are good by beating good opponents?

by rencito on Jan 29, 2009 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

That's definitely still awesome

My favorite is still the one in my signature. Nothing beats it in my eyes.

by DownwithGoldy on Jan 29, 2009 10:04 PM CST reply actions

according to the Media Guide

This was the lowest total we have ever held a Big Ten team. Second lowest of any opponent.

by duckman86 on Jan 29, 2009 10:55 PM CST reply actions

Great win

Holding any team to 36 points is impressive, regardless of how well they played. Great job by the bigs tonight too, especially on the offensive glass.
