Big weekend in college football...

  • Oklahoma vs. Texas
  • USC vs. Notre Dame
  • Minnesota vs. Penn St

The weekend in South Bend will be a monster recruiting weekend for the Irish.  Why do we care about who the Irish are hosting?  Well they are set to host one Seantrel Hendreson.  So let's hope for crappy weather and a terrible game!  Also in Notre Dame news that is semi-related to Minnesota, Michael Floyd is back from his broken collar bone VERY early.  He won't be ready to play for a while but he is back practicing with the Irish.  He must be a "fast healer" like Daunte was.

  • The Times Leader out of Pennsylvania has a nice article on the Gophers trying to regain some respect by putting out a respectable football team.
  • Rittenberg has his midseason Big Ten awards race out for our consumption.  Obviously Decker is in the mix for offensive player of the year.  No mention of Triplett on the defensive side despite some impressive numbers (4th in tackles, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions and 4 pass breakups).
  • Black Shoe Diaries interviewed me to get some thoughts on this weekend's tilt in Happy Valley.  There should also be a podcast up soon on Blue and White Podcast if you want to hear my lovely voice.  And here are my thoughts over at Zombie Nation as well (there are a LOT of PSU blogs out there).
  • The Gophers received another OL verbal commitment.  Josh Allen is a center ranked as the 11th best center by Rivals.  The Texas kid is also ranked the 76th best kid out of Texas by Rivals.  JG will be happy to see that no other school actually offered Allen a scholarship but there was some interest by Baylor and K-State.  This gives us six commitments along the offensive line, seven when Seantrel commits.
  • Everybody's favorite, Myron Medcalf is taking a break from writing Jon Hoese stories to talk a little Gopher basketball.  Today he tackles the tough questions surrounding the incoming recruits.
  • Ben Ramsden searched the internet to find you some awesome Golden Gopher things to purchase.  I actually have the grill topper, it is kind of cool.

FAIL

“Everybody’s favorite, Myron Medcalf”

That’s not how you do mad libs. You don’t just replace the space for a word with a comma and keep going. Try again.

Everyone fails. The successful learn from their failures. I just wish we'd quit giving ourselves so many learning opportunities.

Hold on now GN

Scout tells me Minnesota actually beat out NORTH TEXAS (the MEAN GREEN) for Allen’s signature. So, he is a wanted guy.

Another recruiting tidbit – we just offered De La Salle’s Evan Williams, who projects as a RB / QB / ATH. Only other offer: Wyoming. He got his Minnesota offer last weekend. He is, I believe, unranked.

Of course, a Scout poster is actually comparing him to Lache Seastrunk. My head hurts.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

A Seantrel note

He is all but confirmed to be in Ann Arbor next weekend (October 24th) for the Michigan – Penn State game.

Something is fishy

the #76 rated player in Texas has no major offers?? Something is really wrong with that picture. I wonder if he has some major baggage attached??

by Texas Gopher on Oct 15, 2009 11:40 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe not

The one thing that jumps out to me is that he’s 6’2." If he plays at center, as Rivals suggests he might, he’s undersized as far as playing DTs and/or trying to get wide on stretch blocks (a little shorter, so his wingspan probably isn’t that of, say, Jeff Wills).

As I think everyone knows around here, if a kid in Texas doesn’t have any offers from any team in the Big Twelve (heck, this kid has only one other offer period), i’m highly skeptical of taking him, let alone accepting the commitment this early. This is about the 6th kid now in the past month or two months that has committed that qualifies as a “project.” That’s not really good enough in my e-pinion.

too bad the coaches can’t comment on these guys yet, it would be nice to know what they are thinking.

"they're calling insane hogs???"

Does anyone else feel

the following comment coming from Brewster?

“We are really making inroads into Football hotspots such as Texas and Florida.”

by TheEvilProfessor on Oct 15, 2009 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I personally don’t feel a thing.

Assuming

that means you are getting hammered…congratulations. If not, there have just been so many headscratching recruiting offers to guys from big football states that haven’t received any other high major interest that the only reason it makes sense is that Brewster wants to see a Texas of Florida recruit chart with an increasing trend.

by TheEvilProfessor on Oct 15, 2009 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Given his past ability to get a highly(relative to past success) ranked recruiting class, I would hope that he does see some talent in these guys. If he could recruit before, with the improvement over year one and the shiny new stadium, is there any reason why he wouldn’t be able to recruit the 3 or 4 star guys anymore?

The only difference

is immediate PT. Plus, didn’t he have a lot of Jucos in order to get that ranking? Convincing a kid to redshirt a year or be low on your depth chart is alot harder than saying “I will make you my starter….I mean who are you going to compete against?”

Hopefully

USC blows out ND. USC then loses to OSU which takes them out a title hunt. And the Gophers play OSU and PSU tough. Maybe SH would stay home.

didn't USC and OSU play already?

or are you talking about Oregon St, not tOSU?

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

Gnation

Oregon St Univ. is what I see on the schedule.

his size doesn’t worry me (6’2" and 250 pounds for an 18 y/o). I actually like those numbers. Eslinger was 6’3" as an example. But the fact that he is rated that high and is coming from a good school, has me puzzled.

by Texas Gopher on Oct 15, 2009 1:36 PM CDT reply actions

And he is the 11th ranked center?

That one causes me to scratch my head. how does the 11th ranked center not have an offer? For 6-2 and 256 lbs, he looks pretty athletic and not just a blob, which would be an improvement for our line at the very least. Either Rivals rating system sucks and he is no where near the 11th center which is why he didn’t get offers or they didn’t have his offer sheets updated.
