Eric Decker Is Done As A Footballing Gopher

If you needed any reason to be more pessimistic going into this Saturday, the Pioneer Press happily obliges:

This is obviously devastating news for the offense. However, it could mean more MarQueis Gray, less Adam Weber, and it has to mean the emergence of Green, Carpenter, Stoudermire and Brandon.

Minnesota is now looking 5-7 or 4-8 directly in the face. The ball's on your field, Brewster. The time is now.

By this I’m assuming you mean “ALL MarQueis Gray NO MORE Adam Weber?”

I came on here to simply write the comment “5-7,” you beat me to it…

A little mis-leading

because Decker could be back for a bowl game. I know that looks doubtful at this point, but I’m telling you there’s a chance.

Well cmon now...

He stretched defenses and altered gameplans, but this year due to our offensive ineptitude he hadn’t directly been the difference in 2-3 W/Ls.

This wknd is scary, but I have confidence that we can still reach 6-6. We have a good defense, really!

5-7? Child, please.

SDSU is 5. And let us not forget that we’re going up against a Zook-coached, Juice “quarterbacked” team. 6-6. Decker’s career as a Gopher is not done yet.

Everyone fails. The successful learn from their failures. I just wish we'd quit giving ourselves so many learning opportunities.

No Gimmies With Our Current Offense

If Brewster continues to play Weber 75% of the time or better, we will lose two of the next three for sure. We may squeak by SDSU, but I’l take the points and SDSU. Weber has not moved the offense the entire year or last year when Decker has not been in the game.

A little over reaction

Did we look terrible against Ohio State and Penn State? Sure we did. But honestly, our defense kept us within three scores of Penn State and the offense totally gave the Buckeyes the game (it was 7-0 at halftime, mind you). Was Weber horrible? Yes.

Now back to the bright side. We knew that was going to be a tough stretch and it proved to be. Of course we wish we could have played better. But we are returning home now for a nice stretch where we have played well.

What about Decker? Decker’s absence will force us to use other options and the opposing defense’s game plans won’t be as focused. I really think Green and Stoudermire could be very good Big 10 receivers, they just need to get the ball. We have seen flashes from both, but Weber’s horrible inaccuracy have limited them (1 TD, 6 int’s in his last four games). Weber plays much better at home, so I think this could be a bounce back game for him. I do think he will have a shorter leash, however.

Our offensive play calling also needs to improve. We tend to abandon the run too quickly and pass on 2nd or 3rd and short too often. Whaley has shown some good potential and Bennett is a good change of pace guy. I still don’t think 7-5 is out of the question, but 6-6 is more likely (with us playing MSU tough this weekend).

Gray makes perfect sense

He is a mobile QB and as one of us on this board seems to think its all the offensive lines fault Weber sucks. With that said Gray can break contain and run for yards which in college can kill a defense and the will of the other team. Also they can put plays in to move the pocket….roll outs etc that dont allow the defense to pin their ears back and rush to one point which always seemed to be a glazed over Adam Weber….Also the rest of the receiver corp will now be a wild card to teams planning against the Gophers. Add in Gray at QB and you open up a variety of options that you dont have with Weber. Worst case is we end up playing like we did with Weber, so I see no downside. Best case is we get a spark from some highly touted recruits and we put some doubt in our opponents and win a game or two. Gets Gray some valuable playing time and keeps him from transferring out. Weber can hit the bricks for all Im concerned. Thanks Benjamin Button…..

Just wanted to send my condolences...

Really sucks to hear that he’s oout for the year – Decker was awesome. As a Cal fan that traveled to the Minnesota game, I have to say that he impressed the hell out of me. Decker is a great player with a great NFL future ahead of him, and he sure gave us fits all game. And the way he came back in the game after getting clocked the way he did? Kid’s got guts.

Sorry for the loss of a stand-up player.

Decker

If he has a brain he will sign with the Twins and play baseball. The length of his career and the money to be made will be better than football. As a plus he wont be a vegetable when he turns 50 from getting hung out to dry by a QB….if Weber hadn’t already did that to him.

some thanks are in order too

Decker was by far the best and most exciting player on the team over the last year and a half, maybe two and a half years. Thanks Eric, we’ll sure miss you.
