Good Story on Dan Monson

Here is a good story on our former basketball coach.  I don't think he gets enough credit for what he did for the program.  He came into virtually a no-win situation and made us a competitive team after the fiasco Clem Haskins left behind.  The fact that he even got us back to the Big Dance in 2005 was a feat in itself.

Obviously, we are in a better situation now with Tubby, but Monson got the program back on its feet after its darkest time (I do concede that we were horrible the year he was fired resigned).  He at least put it in position to be good enough for Tubby to take over.  In any event, I hope he does well with Long Beach State, and too bad we don't get to play them in the first round of the 76 Classic--although a possible matchup in the NCAA Tournament wouldn't be that far fetched.

Not sure why...

the strikethrough NEVER works for me. It just plain doesn’t. Any ideas why?

It should say fired in strikethrough. Like strikethrough.

But on fanposts, it doesn’t work for me.

High Expectations

I had really high expectations for him, he came from Gonzaga and did very well there, so I thought if he could do well there, I thought he would excel here.

Even with NCAA sanctions and reduced scholarships?

I didn’t have high expectations at all. After the 2004-05 season, the team did plummet, however.

Too big of a job for him, imo

He may do great at LBSU, but for whatever reason he wasn’t cut out for a Big Ten job. That team that made the tourney was on the back of Grier carrying them and Molinary finally teaching some defense.

He is a really good guy and I’d love to see him succeed. But there were two areas that killed him here. He just couldn’t recruit at this level. And his coaching staff was pretty worthless. At Gonzaga he had Few, here he had Vic Couch. The Molinary hire bought him a year or two but the rest of the staff never did much for Monson.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

Agree that he is a better fit at a smaller school

No doubt. Recruiting was his downfall…but he did produce some NBA talent (albeit, he could never get them to stay).
