Maturi: "I Expect Brewster To Be Back" in 2010.
Well, that's one heck of an endorsement by Maturi. Sid states that unless the Gophers lose their last two games, Brewster will undoubtedly be back in 2010.
Wut? Are we really that close to considering a coaching change? If those are the parameters, Brewster is now officially on the hot seat NOW, and especially in about 6 weeks, let alone 13 months (I'm not sure this is good for recruiting, BTW).
I thought for sure he'd be here until after 2010. However, Sid is such a homer he would never even hint at a coaching change if someone didn't want him to. Therefore, it seems Maturi is floating a test balloon in the media (conveniently, you can even vote in a story-linked poll at the Strib).
It seems like now, if Minny loses to (as projected) either Kansas State (what?) or Texas Tech in the Insight Bowl, Maturi may consider a coaching change.
Really?
Well, if so.....

Brewster
I sense internal problems. The incident on the sidelines with #11 and the coach in the OS game; the turnover of assistant ccoaches; confusion during the game especially on offfense. What does Maturi know that we don’t? I hope the gophers kick butt all over Kinnick stadium on Saturday. They must start off fast offensively and keep the pressure on the new kid at QB to have a chance. I think two losses in a row gives Brewster one more year to produce winner.

Agreed on all fronts
I don’t understand why Maturi would even imply that he needs to assess Brewster’s performance after the season. Why make this public? Why leave the door open that the next two games are in any way job-defining? These kinds of quotes are ones that undoubtedly Danny Hope and other coaches will show to prospective recruits as indicative of Brewster’s job security.
That’s why I think Maturi’s up to something here. Why say, “I expect him to be coach” when you can say “He is our coach and will be in 2010?”
Maybe Maturi is expecting Brewster to test the waters? I don’t know – UNLV and Memphis aren’t the sexiest jobs out there and I get the sneaky suspicion South Bend won’t be calling.
However, HOWEVER, maybe this is about Mike Shanahan (this is all e-pinion, BTW). But, Shanahan is being wooed in Buffalo, and you’ve got to believe Cleveland, Oakland, maybe Dallas (UMMM), Washington, Philadelphia, Carolina, Jacksonville and another team or two will have NFL job openings that Shanahan will land at.
And if Shanahan needs to assemble a staff, any chance that Brewster and Fisch get the call?
Nice Take
I don’t know about Fisch, but if Shanahan is a NFL coach next year, I think there is a good change Brewster goes with him.
I don't find this strange
I don’t understand why Maturi would even imply that he needs to assess Brewster’s performance after the season. Why make this public?
I think you say something like this publicly because it’s already out there. People are already talking about if Brewster deserves a contract extension this year (he doesn’t), or if he should be let go (he shouldn’t). Maturi is no dummy, there is money and season ticket holders at stake. If he were to make an absolute statement like “yes, Brewster will definitely be back,” then what happens if another 55-donut game happens, and another trouncing in Tempe? I think he was just addressing a ground-swell of discussion that is already out there.
Now, having said all of that… he probably would have been better off to just avoid addressing that topic at all at this point.
"Don't you want a little taste of the glory... see what it tastes like?"
Fair points all around
but I don’t think that two days before the Iowa game is the proper time to address these issues. He could have stayed off the record and publicly supported the team and the coach in anticipation of the rivalry game with the Herkeyes, but instead, his article with Sid just added to the looming inquisition over Brewster’s future.
Seriously – if season ticket holders are willing to jump now, with the talent being upgraded, after the first season in the new stadium, with such an attractive slate of national and regional matchups next year at TCF (USC, Penn State, Ohio State, Iowa and South Dakota), well, I find it sad that Maturi would feel his ticket base deserved a carrot at this point in time.
Agreed
This shouldn’t be Brewster’s last year at Minnesota, no matter the losses or other oddities that surround the guy.
However if next year is indeed the “make or break” year, let’s not kid ourselves: It’s going to be very difficult to navigate through that home stretch with a winning record. So with next year being his 4th year at the program and finally having the majority of the team consist of players he recruited, would a failure to bring success next year be more of an indictment on him as a coach or the players he recruited?

Calm Down
The article said that unless we lose the next two games by 100 points, Brewster would be back for 2010. Kind of a big oversight.
If you were Maturi, why wouldn't you be keeping your options open?
JG, for someone who is justifiably critical of Brewster, it astonishes me how on the other hand you seem to find it unthinkable that we’d be close to a coaching change.
For awhile, I thought you were going to lead the charge to make a change!!!
