Michael Carter arrested

From the Star Tribune:

Gophers freshman defensive back Michael Carter was arrested and jailed early Monday morning after being charged with obstructing the legal process and consumption by a minor. Carter was released on bail at 4 a.m., approximately four hours after being arrested, and has a Nov. 16 court hearing.

Minnesota Athletic Director Joel Maturi said this afternoon that he was still gathering information on Carter's arrest and had no comment about possible disciplinary action.

Carter has played extensively as a fifth defensive back this season, and replaced starter Traye Simmons in the second half of Saturday's victory over Michigan State.

According to the University of Minnesota police report, Carter, 18, and Gophers teammate Kenny Watkins, 18, a freshman defensive back, were observed trying to pick a fight with two other males outside of Mesa Pizza just before midnight Sunday. Carter was observed removing his coat and throwing it on the ground, then raising both fists in a fighting stance. Watkins then raised both of his fists.

The other two males appeared to be afraid, and kept walking as Carter and Watkins attempted to surround them, according to the police report. The other males kept walking, and Carter and Watkins eventually turned and went inside Mesa Pizza. The officer at the scene interviewed the other two males, who said Carter and Watkins were attempting to pick a fight with them.

The officer requested back-up help, and when another officer arrived both went inside Mesa Pizza and took the two players outside. Watkins complied with instructions for a pat search, but Carter refused to put his hands on a wall, and when an officer grabbed his arm attempting to throw him to the ground, Carter spun around. Both officers then attempted to get control of Carter, who continued to resist the officers even as several additional Gophers football players came outside and yelled at him to stop.

One of the officers removed a taser gun and pointed it at Carter's chest, according to the report. The player was ultimately wrestled to the ground, handcuffed and taken to Hennepin County Jail.

Something seems very fishy here

Why did the officer call for back-up and search them when no crime was committed? There either has to be some details being left out or there was profiling involved

Trying to start a fight is a crime

It doesn’t appear Watkins was charged at all. If Carter had just complied (no mention of him having any weapons or drugs) they may have gotten away with just being stupid.

profiling are you serious

Maybe if they were white. I got pulled over by a black cop in minneapolis and got my vehicle towed for having an out of state license and lived there for 2 months. I had to walk down Washington by the sex clubs carrying my groceries for 2 miles to get to my apartment. If there is racism in the minneapolis pd it is definately black on white.

That is going a little far...

…saying that one isolated incident is profiling is like giving Brewster coach of the year accolades after one win.

All I'm saying is I think there are some pretty important details being left out.

As in, why did they get up in these guys’ faces? Carter and Watkins didn’t attack these guys, but what provoked them into wanting to fight? And really, instead of having the officer talk to the players like they did the other two guys, why would the officer call for back-up and perform a search? Was there no information of this kind in the report??

This kind of reminds me about the Tinsley incident and the “brawl” that occurred a short time ago. Why do I get the feeling of someone being baited? When an Augsburg player calls the cops and immediately say that there are MINNESOTA FOOTBALL PLAYERS coming after him, I sense the “victim” is not completely innocent. I get the same feeling when these guys weren’t attacked, yet they rat and go to mommy and daddy.

I’m speculating. I wish I knew the whole story.

And to clarify

I’m not defending Watkins’ and Carter’s actions, but I never fully trust the media; the stories are waaaaaaaaaaay to easy to manipulate.

Mbakwe

What are the chances this Mbakwe charge gets resolved during the season? Assuming he is innocent. Is this year lost for him? I keep hearing December 14th but at the same time I hear they want to delay it.

Carter

Why would Carter and teamate decide to just pick a fight with two guys? Something missing here. Also, police mishandled situation the way it sounds in the report.

Underage miscreants

Watkins and Carter were outside and tried to pick a fight after obviously inebriated? I’d like to know what the rest of the team were doing inside the pizzaria. Let me guess – they were drinking milk!

being that it was a pizzeria, maybe they were eating a pizza? just a guess.

Lets see i had the exact same charges as an 18 yr old

It was stupid of me and cost me dearly. The obstruction of justice is still on my record and after almost 8 years it just cost me my chance at getting a concealed carry licence and that is after 6 years of Army service without so much as a negative counseling. I cant even begin to understand why there is no discipline on this team or really any college football team. The truth is if i was in charge every player that has any charge like this would get suspended for the year and anything worse they would be suspended forever. The bad part is that some other college would with no standards would just get him to go there and in 2 years he would be starting for Cincinatti or West Virginia and all us Minnesota fans would be talking how much better our team would be if we had him. This a couple weeks after the Tinsley incident is sad and i doubt this team is gaining more local support with reports like this coming out every week. It makes me wish they would do more to check the character of these kids especially coming from out of state before they give them the scholarship over a minnesota kid.

18 and 19 year old

football players do have a lot of pressure on them. It’s no excuse for getting in a brawl, but people do tend to forget how young these players are. They are in a sport that requires aggression to be successful, yet they must not let that aggression spill over to their non-football lives. At that age, I cannot imagine trying to handle the attention from hecklers, opportunistic women, friends seeking a piece of fame, and troublemakers who want to start problems.

I believe that one of the greatest recruiting benefits of this school is that players can have a big city experience that has pro sports teams for every sport, the Mall of America, numerous festivals and events, concerts, and everything else within a short commute. Unfortunately, this opportunity also raises the risk for trouble to find them. It is probably much easier to remain insulated from trouble in a small town atmosphere such as can be found in every other Big Ten school besides Northwestern. I cannot offer any proof, but common sense tells me that incidents such as this happen at places like Florida, LSU, Texas, Alabama, and the like but usually never make the news or end in an arrest. It’s no excuse for their arrest, but it does make me wonder.

Can you imagine being a coach with 100 young players on your team who have unlimited opportunities to party and go to places where people might cause trouble? I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night. But, that’s probably why I ended up a writer from the outside looking in.

Florida

as an example, has had something like 27 arrests in the past two and a half years. Most of the players are allowed to keep playing pending completion of their criminal investigations.

After the Wisconsin game

I was walking down the sidewalk by the campus McDonald’s with a buddy, and two drunk (or more likely, high on something strong) college kids in U of MN sweatshirts were yelling insults at people walking by. A mere glance in their direction resulted in their screaming for a fight as they followed us. I’ll admit that the thought crosses your mind that they deserve to be taught a lesson (No personal claims of fighting expertise, but my buddy used to box competitively for the Army and could have handled them both). We kept on walking. The news headline would have been “Two 30 year old men violently assault college students enjoying the post-game experience.”

We’ll probably never know the true story behind the arrests this past weekend, but trouble is everywhere for people who aren’t mature enough to pass it by.

Carter

Give Carter a break on this one. He is just a new college kid doing what other college kids his age were doing, and it appears he was roughed up by the police. Watch out for the police, they may not be reasonable in these situations, and may overreact. We don’t know much about this incident, but an 18 yo kid in a big city away from home can be expected to make mistakes, and this was not a bad one considering what else it could have been, such as weapons, drugs, etc. I don’t want to see him suspended, but if team rules are in place, then he must pay the price.

by bobbyspringfield on Nov 2, 2009 10:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He probably deserves to sit

for at least a game. I agree these are just kids and some of them are going to do stupid things, but a one game penalty is probably due for something like this, and he is probably getting off easy. The charges sound like they could have been worse.

Speaking of suspensions…is anyone else as dumbfounded as I am by the fact that that Florida LB was caught on camera trying to gouge someone’s eyes…then was suspended for half of the Vandy game by the coach…and then the SEC upholds the punishment? Wow. That situation is way worse than LaGarrette Blount in my opinion.

There is a big difference between suspending players for a bit until the facts are clear and cutting them off completely. I have no problem with how Maturit handled the Mbakwe situation. It sets a precedent that stupid behavior may cost you. I much prefer this to the Florida example above where thugs are allowed to keep playing in the interest of winning. Then let the courts handle it in the offseason.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

It's just so sad though...

In court it’s ‘innocent until proven guilty’, but on the court… guilty until proven innocent.

THIS IS SO FUNNY

I go to get my gopher fix, and it is just so fitting that after the post titled “IT’S A GREAT MONDAY” when Brewster’s biggest win of his tenure has FINALLY rejuvenated the “gophernation” , is this nonsense! I know these are young men and they will make mistakes, but c’mon man! Use your head Carter! Oh well, just thought that it was so perfect i had to post
