Death Knell

When athletic directors need to state obvious facts, you know you’re cooked. I think it’s Rose Bowl or unemployment for Brewster next year. After his steadfast refusal to admit that anything is wrong over the past five games, I think he’s earned the hot seat he’s sitting on.

Doesn't really say much

What is he supposed to say? Other than saying that or he is our football coach, which you have equally criticized, I’m not really sure what is the “right thing” to say.

Semantics are boring.

What

has or has not made up his mind about exactly? whether to give him an extension or to fire him?

"they're calling insane hogs???"

That didn't make sense

I’ll phrase it like this…

What has Maturi, maybe, made up his mind about? whether to give him an extension or to fire him?

"they're calling insane hogs???"

Extension

Guessing it’s the extension that Maturi has “made his mind up” about. And the answer is absolutely not.

Since 2007, Brewster and Maturi have not been on regular speaking terms. I have no doubt that Maturi is hoping the football program is successful, but I believe he truly would love to “undo” the Brewster hire.

I, for one, would love to hear Brewster acknowledge his frustration something like this. After the SDSU game, for example, I would have liked to hear: “Our kids played hard, sure, but that’s a minimum expectation in this program. Our execution from both a playing and coaching standpoint were completely unacceptable, and that’s on me as the head football coach. I take great pride in being the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, and we need to be better. Simply being bowl-eligible isn’t good enough for our coaching staff, our players, and Gopher Nation. We need to take a hard look at the way we’re doing things and do a better job of getting our team ready on gameday.”

Brewster's retort

yesterday morning on ’CCO was that he needed to keep recruiting.

His approach, since he was hired, was always to put off the day of reckoning. In 2007, he needed the new stadium. This year, with the new stadium, he put in a new offense. Now he’s got the new offense, and he needs more talent.

At some point he’s got to stop kicking the can forward. He gets his chance next year with USC, Penn State, Ohio State and Iowa at TCF.
