Daily Nugz - 12.10.09, Brewster speaks
Kent Youngblood provides today's Nugz with a couple quality Nugz.
Tim Brewster said he had not contacted Kansas about the open position there, was not a candidate for that or any other job and intended to be the Gophers coach "for a long time."
"It happens every year," Brewster said of the rumors. "Last year I was asked about Tennessee. It's unfortunate that unsubstantiated rumors circulate in the coaching profession this time of year. ... I'm not a candidate for any other job. I'm where I want to be, and I'll be here for a long time."
Indeed, Brewster suggested he and Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi had begun at least preliminary talks about extending Brewster's contract, which has two years remaining on it.
"The contract situation is a non-issue," Brewster said. "I have two years left on my contract, and we're talking about extending the contract."
Well I guess it's all over, for now. He said what he had to say and we'll all move on to other things, for now. Like MarQueis Gray for instance...
"We're going to try to wear him out pretty good [in the bowl game]," Brewster said of Gray. "He's going to play a whole bunch."
After Wednesday's practice, Gray was a very tired and sore freshman.
"My body's killing me right now," he said. "But it's a way to get on the field, though."
That will be mostly at receiver for the Insight Bowl and then the QB competition will be open come Spring practice.
- The Dinkytown circus continued, this time the entertainment is provided by Royce White. He claims to be posting a YouTube video giving the "Royce White Story." Clearly this kid just doesn't get it.
VIDEO LINK - No wonder all the good football players play in the South. I don't hear of hostesses around the Big Ten.
- There is talk of the NCAA Tournament expanding. Someone get this message to the NCAA, the basketball tournament is perfect. DO NOT MESS IT UP!! Watering it down will bring in more money short-term but dilute interest long-term. I love the NCAA Tournament more than anything else in sports, please do not expand. Letting an 8th Big Ten team and the third best team in the WCC into the tournament is just ridiculous. They do not deserve a shot at a Championship especially when this opportunity is presented to them so the NCAA can make more money.

Royce White Video
It was just him taking shots and doing bench presses. Nothing interesting.

What Brewster is doing with Gray proves the fallacy of his argument that the team ABSOLUTELY NEEDS these 15 bowl practices, and that these practices improve the team over time.
What the Gophers need, more than anything else, is a bona fide competition at the QB position going into 2010. So what is Brewster doing with Gray for the bowl game and these 15 practices? Instead of taking snaps for the entirety of these practices at QB, Gray is now learning and practicing as a WR.
Of course, if you’re concerned about your star athlete transferring, you promise him you’ll get him on the field at all costs in a bowl game, and then promise him a QB competition in the spring.
As for Brewster’s comments, what a bunch of self-serving garbage. Those unsubstantiated rumors were started by….Brewster’s camp.
Do we know
for sure that Brewster’s camp started the rumors? Or are the unsubstantiated rumors proven wrong by other unsubstantiated rumors?
"they're calling insane hogs???"
I don't know how you all deal with it
All the rumors, never knowing when you’re coach is going to be grabbed by another school. It’s got to be rough at the end of each year.
/sarcasm
It never gets to be easy
Oh I know
I mean, Brewster is just way to talented for anyone to hold onto him. We’re talking about a future Big Ten champion/Rose Bowl bound coach here.*
*PS – I think I just used up my year’s worth of sarcasm supply here.

I wonder
what Barry Alvarez was going through at the end of his 3rd season, he didn’t even have a winning season yet.
"they're calling insane hogs???"
The main thing that irritates me about Brewster
is all the BS that comes out of his mouth. That and how he constantly changes offensive schemes. Once we decided to build an outdoor stadium it should have been pretty obvious what type of offense we needed to run. Which probably goes a long way in explaning why Weber sucked so hard this year. We should have always been a running/play action team. Recruits come to those types of teams when the style of play matches their abilities. Over time, if you have success, the more talented players come.
It seems like Brewster switches styles to try to get nationally ranked recruiting classes to support the recruiting reputation he has instead of actually trying to win.
