2010 class ranked #51
Scout.com ranks Minnesota's 2010 recruiting class #51, just ahead of Indiana. 8th in Big Ten. This probably isn't a big suprise to those that follow these kinds of things, but I don't and I am suprised. Brewster is supposed to be the master recruiter. I'm not impressed. There should be no discussion about a contract extension that doesn't have better severance terms than the current contract. He is in over his head, and the quicker Maturi figures this out, and acts, the better.

Kinda early?
to be assessing the class until the signing period is over I would think. What would Seantrel do for our rank?

I agree. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

I’m ambivalent about the class at this point, but, let’s wait until February 6th or so before we complain about this class’s composition. The members of the class change almost daily with de-commits and commits.

Don’t most people consider Scout to be the least recognized service behind Rivals & ESPN? Wouldn’t it be more fair to also quote Rivals where we are #37 and 6th in the Big Ten when most people consider Rivals to be better?

I consider Rivals to be more accurate
ESPECIALLY in this case :).
But I do believe the general consensus is that Rivals is better but that is probably more subjective than giving stars to 18 yr old kids.
On the rivals side the key number (imo) is 5.7. This is their Rivals rank. A 5.7 is still a three-star but he is “high” three-star. 5.8 is a four-star. Here are the number of commits 5.7 or better in Brewster’s classes.
2008 – 11
2009 – 11
2010 – 6
We really do need to wait until the class is finished but this is the reason this class is being ranked in the 35-50 range, not 25-35.
For reference sake and perspective on how much the “on paper” talent is being upgraded, here are the number of 5.7 or greater commits prior to Brew…
2007 – 4 (2 Brew and 2 Mason)
2006 – 0
2005 – 1
2004 – 0

The Mason comparison
is a red herring.
It’s a given that the talent is upgrading. The comparison between the talent with Brewster and Mason doesn’t matter however (the way it matters, if anything, is to prove how much better of a coach Mason was). What DOES matter is the comparison between Brewster and the rest of the conference.
Brewster’s classes consistently rank between 5-8 in the conference, no matter what service you subscribe to. That gets you………Champs Sports Bowl bids, if you’re lucky.
Brewster repeatedly said the goal is to get to Pasadena and the Rose Bowl, and we’re repeatedly told to wait for a complete set of Brew players to judge him. Well, given 5 years of Tressel recruits, 5 years of Paterno recruits, 5 years of Bielema recruits, 5 years of Ferentz recruits, 5 years of Rodriguez recruits, and the coaching associated with each set, does anyone here honestly think 5 years of Brewster recruits can beat all those teams and win the conference? I’ll hang up and listen.

the mason classes were a throw in
the point was that this class isn’t as strong as the other classes because it is missing some 5.7 guys. It is also for perspective. If Mason would have signed this class people would be ecstatic.
Brewster HAS to start winning some games, he hasn’t proven anything on the field yet. But I think the criticism of this particular class undue.
What would happen if someone was capable of recruiting AND coaching? I just can’t even imagine.

Brewster was great as an assitant
But I can tell now why he was never even a coordinator any place. His leadership abilities are insufficient. He is a terrific recruiter—which was the reason we hired him—but I don’t trust his on the field abilities at all.
That being said, he probably deserves one more year to prove himself. Next year’s schedule is a killer and we probably won’t go to a bowl game without some signature wins.

is next year's schedule any tougher than this years?
I see four wins that we absolutely have to have (MTSU, NIU, USD, NU).
Pur / Ill needs to be one road win, two isn’t out of the question.
Wis / MSU games are possible though I’m not holding my breath.
Then one of the four really tough home games you need to steal. Regardless of the outcomes, season ticket holders have to love the slate of quality teams coming to TCF again this year.

I think it is a lot tougher
We should win our non-conference games other than USC and Northwestern at home, although the latter is no gimme.
All of the “winnable” games are on the road. Wisconsin, Purdue, Michigan State, Illinois are all away from TCF. Every one of those teams expects to beat us on their home field. I’m not saying we can’t win any of them, but it makes next year’s schedule tougher than this year’s since all of those games were at home this year. Instead, we get OSU, PSU, and Iowa at home. Tough.
My really early prediction is 4-8 for the season—which means 1-7 in conference play. I can see 5-7, but I really don’t see 6-6.

To clarify
My first sentence should read: The games I see us winning are the three non-conference games (outside USC) as well as Northwestern at home. I didn’t write that particularly clearly the first time around.

Apparently 42nd class now on Scout
After a couple adjustments the Gophers moved up several spots and one spot in the conference.
Part of why Scout isn’t as widely trusted is their star rankings are more based on overall rank than actual analysis / eval of the recruit. It is something like top XXX players are 5 star, XXX-XXX are 4-star, etc. So less analysis of what a 4-star actually looks like and more about lists.

#42, #51 - It doesn't matter...
My point is that Brewster needs to be a top 20 recruiter if he is going to be as mediocre as he has shown so far. I hope he can get to #20 or better.

Expecting MN to have top 20 recruiting classes each year is unrealistic
Until we prove that we can compete for BigTen championships we will not be able to recruit with the elites.

no doubt
a top 20 class will be a once every three or four years event. If we get a top 20 class every year then we should be in the hunt for a conference championship every year. Also not realistic in the foreseeable future.

Seantrell
If we get him, which isn’t likely, we should have a class ranked in the 20’s.
