Fisch discussed on Barreiro's Show Today
Earlier today KFAN's Dan Barreiro, as is his tradition, ran through his "Top Five at Five," his selection of the top 5 sports stories of the day (an obvious concession to his detractors who claim he doesn't talk enough sports).
One of the topics was an interview conducted with our new Offensive Coordinator, Mr. Fisch. I don't know the source, I don't know when this interview took place. However, Fisch was asked what the Gopher offense will look like.
We've all reviewed how the spread is now dead, and may have seen his prior interview from Signing Day, when he said that he will start watching tape this week and will formulate an offense from here.
Well, the interview clip I heard told us all what to expect. I'm paraphrasing here, but he said, if you mix the formations and running game of the Pittsburgh Steelers, with the wide-open passing attack of the Arizona Cardinals, you will have a good feel as to what kind of offense the Gophers will run next year.
Barreiro, in response to this comment, basically told Fisch to shut up. To stop barking until there is actual performance on the field.
I can only imagine the roundtable with Brewster and Fisch:
B: What kind of tremendous offensive football can we run to make the state of Minnesota proud?
F: Let's run a pro-style with the best parts of the Pittsburgh and Arizona offenses.
B: Tremendous. I love football.
I like Fisch's ambition on the offensive end. However, I agree that he should step back a little on the explanation of what we're going to see. I'd take a pro-style ball control offense with play-action sets, with some 4 WR looks and the occasional option with Weber or Gray to keep the D off-balance. What he promised in the KFAN clip cannot even be delivered by the teams he attempts to emulate. However, I wish him luck in trying.

Barreiro is not a sports fan
I like listening to the variety of talk/guests he has, but he just is always negative when it comes to sports in this or any town (save for his beloved Cubs who haven’t won a world series in his lifetime). I don’t consider him a sports fan or worthy of sports radio, but a good talk radio host. He should be on their sister station instead of KFAN. He may have valid points, but when you’re all negative, all the time, you lose credibility even when you do bring up a valid criticism.
I’d like to see a pro-style 3WR, 1TE, 1RB offense where on occasion either the RB or TE move into the slot, to give a spread look. Save the FB for the other 20% of the game – short yardage, goal line, option plays, etc…
I agree with you....
…….but I think we’re going to see a lot of running backs next year (FB and RB, or two RB sets) with Mr. Davis’ arrival on campus.
sounds like the perfect offense
but I think it can be improved. Here is what we SHOULD have…
Denver’s running game
Pittsburgh’s power game
Arizona’s downfield passing game
maybe some West Coast offense
some elements of the spread
don’t forget the run-n-shoot
and of course the Kick Ass Offense
if we can take the best of all of those we should have a decent offense.
what you say here can, and will, be used against you
at this point...
..doesn’t every team have a little West Coast offense in them?
We should also install the 0-11 offense that team in California ran this year.
