National Signing Day Surprise - Michael Carter is golden!!

Four star cornerback Michael Carter has told Gopher Illustrated (GI.com) that he has changed his mind and will sign with Minnesota!

"I have decided to sign with Minnesota," Carter told GopherIllustrated.com. "I wasn't sure until this morning when I woke up but I just felt a lot closer to the staff at Minnesota, especially the head coach."

  • Carter is the cousin of Tyrone Carter.
  • Carter originally committed to West Virginia at the US Army All-American game.
  • According to Rivals' rankings, Carter instantly becomes the Gophers' highest rated recruit.

This is outstanding news and takes the class from good (better than it is given credit for) to very good and something to be excited about.  Carter was in the top two on my wish list from the beginning.

Star ratings do not guarantee success, but they have been proven to be a strong indicator.  Carter will likely add depth to the secondary while he sits behind Simmons and Sherels this year but should be given every opportunity to be a starting corner for three years after that (assuming he doesn't redshirt).

Happy to have Carter on board and what a way to start the morning of National Signing Day!
