Are We All Getting Hints About Decker's Future?

I didn't really think it was a serious consideration that Eric Decker would forego his senior season as a Wide Receiver for the Gophers, especially since they would be opening the new stadium.

However, signs keep coming in that his future is truly up in the air. For example, Marcus Fuller of the PiPress today:

Sure, Decker looks forward to coming back and is fully committed to the Gophers (in a weird way, he is the McDaniels to the Gophers' Cutler, making sure the Gophers don't feel jilted). However, he is looking to the MLB draft.

Also, don't forget about that recent quote by Brewster in Sid's column where he said his only three cinch starters in the fall and did not include Decker. We all thought it was another stupid quote by Brew, but maybe he did not include Decker because he isn't sure Decker will be around.

I think Gopher football fans should prepare for a possible Drew Henson - like defection this summer. If the money is good enough, Decker sounds like he is open to leaving. I hope Kuznia, Green and the others are ready to step up.

I sure hope I am too.....

…..I think there will be a place for a steady hand like Decker to influence the offense this fall. He’s got the skills to catch balls, but maybe more importantly, he has the strength and experience to run-block, which I’m sure is getting the extra look with the new offense. I’d prefer Decker blocking on the outside than one of the redshirt freshmen or true sophomores.

Again, my concern is the money. Not only the MLB money in a vacuum (which may be a lot), but also because the next collective bargaining agreement in the NFL may be constructed to reduce rookie salaries so much that Decker may just make the jump to MLB this year to get guaranteed cash.

JG2112 - undies always bundled

Yes, the kid sees his future in baseball. So what? For his sake, I hope he is successful in baseball later in life. But if you really think he’s going to give up his senior season as a football player you are on crack.

He may not like Brewster that much but his heart is still with the football team. The likelihood that he doesn’t lead the team downfield in TCF on Sept 12 is the same as Common getting a real job.

I didn't know Decker.....

…didn’t like Brewster. Is that fact or speculation? I’m being serious, I didn’t know that.

And, I never said he was leaving, just don’t be surprised, based on his own comments, if he does.

And if you think a fat MLB contract can’t overcome football “glory,” read up about Drew Henson. Going into his senior year he was a Heisman favorite, possible top draft pick for the NFL draft. Steinbrenner (Ohio State grad, I must add) threw almost $20 million at him and he left Ann Arbor to play in the Yankee farm system. We saw he stunk at pro baseball, and who will ever forget his one appearance for the Cowboys (T-Giving Day?). He wouldn’t be the first, and he’d be giving up a lot less – even with him coming back this team will do well to get past 6-6, and he’d be susceptible to more injuries just like he suffered in 2008. He may just prefer the relative health and guaranteed cash of baseball. I think I would.

Maybe we ought to do some research and see if any Iowa or Wisconsin grads own MLB teams….

Decker

I’ve heard from a few accounts that he is still a bit away from being a MLB player. He has been hit or miss at the plate this season. He started on fire, but has really cooled off. He also has cost the Gophers a few runs, including Wednesday when he tried to take second on a pitch in the dirt and was thrown out.

Is he a solid baseball player? Yes. Is he a better football player? I think so.

But, we’ll see. Brew didn’t talk much about him at the spring practice press conference other than he won’t be participating due to baseball.
