Brew: Foot-In-Tweet
I'd like to commend the Daily Gopher on its coverage of Tim Brewster's recent Twittering. As much as some Gopher fans would like to adopt a hear-no-evil, see-no-evil, say-no-evil approach, I think that something "tweeted" by Brewster (or another of his pea-brained yes-men ... *cough* Brezowitz *cough*) is just as relevant as a off-the-schneid remark in public.
It's probably also worth noting that in an age when NCAA coaches are working to be at the forefront of the recruiting race (as we have seen in the past few years with texting, etc) it's worth asking why someone with the 'U' hasn't either a) planted a foot in Brewster's ass or 2) a muzzle on his big mouth.
As a Gopher fan who lauded Brewster as a grassroots rally cry leader and recruiting guru when he was hired, I am admitting my mistake. I can really now feel the beginning of the end for Brewster in Dinkytown. I think a 'tweet' such as the one we've seen from Brewster this week is indicative of his pig-headed, ultra self-aware nature. This will ultimately be his undoing as a collegiate head coach - I would be shocked to see him on the sidelines of TCF Bank Stadium come the fall of 2010, regardless of the 2009 team's record.
A coach that REALLY cares about what Pat Reusse or GopherHole commenters have to say (and Brewster does) on a daily basis is over their head at the Division I level. It's a dog-eat-dog world, and Brewster is just too proud to handle it.
Editors of The Daily Gopher retain the right to remove posts deemed excessively offensive or grossly inappropriate. Keep it clean and don't be mean.

Immaturity
I think it’s another indication of Brewster’s immaturity. We saw that with the alleged Charlie Weis situation Link: http://pagingjimshikenjanski.blogspot.com/2007/06/brewster-says-weis-is-fat-etc.html
We’ve seen it with his over and unfair hyping of recruits.

lets not get carried away here though...
Brewster isn’t the only one out there doing stupid things in the name of recruiting. Did anybody see Bruce Pearl’s rapping escapade?
Dumb? absolutely
the undoing of his career? I think that is overstating a bit.
It is worth talking about and people seem to really have an opinion but a month from now this will be long forgotten.

He's creating a narrative for himself.
Brewster is slowly creating a picture of himself that has and will continue to define him. From now on any slip of the tongue and ill-advised statement will be seen through the narrative that he’s creating for himself, that he’s immature and prone to bone-headed statements.

Right on, PJS
The blinders-wearing Gopher faithful may be soon to forget Brewster’s ill-advised statements/tweets, but there is absolutely no doubt that Joel Maturi won’t forget the embarrassment that his head football coach has brought to the program and the department.
Don’t be surprised if Brewster’s first season at TCF Bank Stadium is his last. From ill-advised statements, to a revolving door of assistant coaches, to an overall lack of maturity, to a likely sub-.500 upcoming season, the writing is on the wall for Brew.

THIS isn't his undoing...
Just want to clarify my point a bit to GN and others who may be thinking as he does:;
I’m not pointing to this Twitter gaffe as a catalyst of his undoing at Minnesota. Rather, I think that it is indicative of the attitudes that will ultimately doom him as a college football coach.
Many are realizing now that his hiring after the Insight Bowl debacle that resulted in Mason’s canning is one we see a lot: ‘U’ bigwigs “overcorrected” in what they perceived to be (for lack of a better term) “aloofness” of Mason and his staff in relation to the ebbs and flows of college football. The Mason Administration didn’t seem to be bothered by what Gopher fans viewed as mind-numbing losses, didn’t seem too flashy publically, and didn’t seem to take a lot of pride in their football team publicly.
With Brewster, I and many other Gopher fans found the anti-Mason (and thus, a savior!). Now, we’re backpeddling along with Maturi and Co. I’ll say this: the one thing Brew could do to buy himself another year (besides going to a New Year’s Day Bowl, which appears extremely unlikely) is landing Seantrel Henderson.

Everyone does crazy stuff in recruiting....
…there’s that Lane Kiffin guy I keep hearing about too.
PJS – the narrative of Brewster has already been set – bluster, “tremendous,” “look at the history,” and “brand new stadium.” Remember those Big Ten ads where the coaches sit on the recruit’s couch? His schtick? “We’ve got a brand new stadium.” He’s trying out new lines now and that’s where the Fat Pat came from, I guess. I don’t think the Tweet is that embarrassing – it’s just stupid and classless. Er, that may be worse.
(and how about the latest Tweet that the spring game starts at 1:30 and will be done by 2:45? What is that? The Michigan spring game was over 2 hours long – I had the sunburn to prove it. One hour and fifteen minutes? That’s about 35 plays. Play a game already or I’ll just stay home.)
The other narrative – continuing the Gopher tradition of melting down at the end of games (Northwestern) and seasons (Iowa) – also defines Brew. As does a 8 – 14 record as a head coach.
I think that Brewster is safe this year – the schedule is significantly harder and, as you all know, I think anywhere between 4 and 8 wins is the zone for 2009. That said, a bad start (losing at Syracuse and the first three home games against AFA, Cal and Wiscy) would be almost fatal to his career. Heck, 1-4 won’t look good (don’t forget we’ve got NW in Evanston too). Yet, if he makes it, 2010 is his make or break year. He asked for USC, and he got them. Even teams with elite talent and top level coaches get run by USC during non-conference. If Brewster doesn’t win, or keep that game within 28 points, he will have failed to show the progress that he promised for the program, and I think Fisch or another outsider (Dungy? Shanahan? Schottenheimer? Fassel? Gruden? Cowher?) will be given the reins of the team.

A small aside as well.....
…I just want to rip the Big Ten Network here, and I may expand this to a separate post, for scheduling the Gophers to host Michigan State at night on Halloween.
I now am being asked not only to pony up the money for four season tix, and for the “premium seat” fees, but I’m also being asked to make the decision whether to watch the Gophers play Little Brother at TCF on 10/31, or to take my two children trick or treating.
I know – I “don’t need to make the choice.” “Nobody’s forcing you to buy the tickets.” “You don’t have to go to the game.”
My retort – a network and a conference completely beholden to the almighty dollar wouldn’t make me choose between family or football. The Big Ten has no problem keeping the facade of academics up in their opposition to a play-off or conference title game, but, on what is one of the best nights of the year to be a parent, we’re all asked to choose.
Why couldn’t the Big Ten expand it’s “no night game in November” policy by one day to preserve this event? Oh yeah, $$$

Yes, that is indeed unfortunate.
Credit should go to Bud Selig for trying to get at least one World Series game during a weekend afternoon. Fox surely would prefer the primetime game, but having a day game has benefits for baseball. A World Series game under the sun? It’s a shame that’s a novel idea.

Right.....
….GN – why would you want to sit with the unwashed masses when you as a media member get access to the loge suites and the alcohol?

Interesting Situation
Ok, get a cup of coffee. This might take a bit to read.
I think the heart of this situation is that Brewster led a spectacular meltdown at the end of the year last year when the team got worn down physically. If he ends the year by winning 2 of the 3 games they should have won (Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin) and doesn’t get curbstomped by Iowa, this isn’t a big deal. I don’t know many Gopher fans who would spit on Pat if he was on fire, and Brewster would just be doing what the rest of us do. Another of the problem is the forum he used. I’ve been around a coach that told a beat writer to (this is the cleaned up version) go procreate himself with his pencil, then just berated the guy for about 5 minutes. Nobody cared, because it wasn’t widely publicized. Brewster, for the amount of saavy he has at using technology to help him, just doesn’t seem to get that when he says something, no matter how small, it’ll be out there forever. And it will be used against him. At some point he needs to turn on that filter that most people have that warns him before doing something that may be stupid. And winning a few more close games wouldn’t hurt, either.
In the end, one question remains: how would you like to wake up every day and be Pat Reusse? I know I wouldn’t be able to look in the mirror.

Anyone else think ....
… that Brewster is screwed either way? When he has the filter “on,” we get his incessantly optimistic drivel about everything “tremendous,” “i love football,” I love Minnesota, etc. When it’s off, we get the press conference incident PJS referred to and Twitter-gate 2009. Maybe the best is just to be quiet?
I wonder what recruits think of all this. And I am continually shocked that recruits buy the Brewster lemonade, though I am not complaining.
