Golden Nugz for 05-14-09
Big weekend for some of the Gopher spring sports.
Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships will be this weekend in Columbus. The women are attempting to be the third team in Big Ten history to win the unofficial triple crown. They have already won Big Ten Championships for Cross Country and Track and Field Indoor, but winning the outdoor will be a challenge from Michigan and Penn State. The men are trying to sweep the Indoor and Outdoor Championships and will should have a decent shot considering they are the only Big Ten team ranked in the top 25 (17th).
Gopher baseball, as you know, are a half game up in the Big Ten standings and head to Penn State controlling their own fate. Scott Matyas was named Big Ten Pitcher of the week for his work at Michigan and NDSU last week. Matyas is the Gopher's closer and he pitched 2.1 perfect innings collecting two saves.
Men's Golf is also competing in a big event this weekend as they head to New Jersey for the NCAA Regionals.
- It is somewhat surprising to me how little coverage we are getting on the GM / head coaching searches for both the Wild and the Timberwolves. Be sure to check Canis Hoopus and Hockey Wilderness to stay abreast with the current searches. Maybe it isn't a lack of coverage but rather a lack of any interest around town. Coverage is there is you seek it but does anybody care?
- ESPN's Adam Rittenberg is ranking the 30 best players in the Big Ten. Traye Simmons comes in at #25 on his list. Decker (#2) and Weber (#16) will also be on his list but he has not yet gotten to profiling them yet.
- Video of Rodney Williams. Also related to Williams, it is being reported that he scored a 17 on his ACT which should be enough to get him enrolled for next year.
- Grant Potulny has been brought on as a volunteer assistant coach. Interesting how the Big Ten Network says he has been "hired" as a "volunteer."

Wow.....
…don’t you get 14 just for signing your name on the ACT? Williams’ score is in Rashard Griffith territory – bad.
I don't think that is terrible
according to ACT’s wiki page that is equivalent to a 1210 SAT and is about 25th percentile. Not outstanding by any stretch but for the low academic expectations for college athletes I don’t know that a 17 is far worse than others.
what you say here can, and will, be used against you
Well, a 17....
..indicates Williams is not academically ready for college, according to that Wiki page. Let’s hope he remembers he’s a student-athlete.
On another note, the starting quarterback for Syracuse against the Gophers on 9/5 could very well be Greg Paulus, now that he’s playing for the Orange-people……
good
the kid hasn’t played QB since high school and missed spring practice. Let him start game one and see how he like BPT and Sherels!

Rittenberg rankings
How do you know that Decker is going to be #2? Is the whole list available somewhere?
I just know these things...
or Rittenberg published the list first…http://myespn.go.com/blogs/bigten/0-3-377/Top-25-Big-Ten-Players.html

How do you feel about that ranking?
Seems like a Rittenberg man-crush to me. I don’t know how to quantify rankings and such. Perhaps he’s looking at what happened to the Gophers after he got hurt. I dunno.
He’s Top Ten, that’s for sure, but I wouldn’t say he’s better than Pryor, Wooten, Bowman or Darryl Clark.
