Golden Nugz for 05-19-09
The Big Ten announced their regular season awards. Gopher second baseman, Derek McCallum was the only Gopher to make first team All-Big Ten. That is great, but what bothers me is the McCallum was not B10 Player of the Year. Instead it went to Ohio State catcher Dan Burkhart. I haven't watched a ton of games this year but I fail to see how a guy who 40 points behind McCallum or how McCallum's double digit RBI lead over anybody was not enough to overcome finishing a 1/2 game out of first place. Burkhart may be a great catcher who does far more than producing at the plate, I'm guessing it is that coupled with OSU finishing at the champs that won it for him. I'm disappointed for McCallum, I thought he was a lock to win it.
Gophers earning individual honors...
First Team - Derek McCallum (unanimous)
Second Team - AJ Pettersen
Second Team - Seth Rosin
Second Team - Scott Matyas
Third Team - Mike Kvasnicka
Third Team - Matt Nohelty
Third Team - Tom Buske
All Freshman
Nick O'Shea
AJ Pettersen
Justin Gominsky
Austin Lubinsky
- In other news, Pam Borton lost one of her assistants to UCONN. Marisa Mosely must have been doing something right because she is moving on up to one of the premier programs in all of Women's basketball.
- The Gopher Hockey schedule is shaping up according to Roman's research.
- The Barn floor is being replaced! This should be its own post. Here is a history of the Barn. But 1,407 Gopher basketball games have been played on that exact floor. There have been exactly 2 losing seasons for the men since 1935-36.
I'd like to know what many of your best memories are of the Barn.

McCallum not winning was a sham! A sham I say!
I’d pegged Burkhart no higher than 3rd on the list. I guess first place buys you extra votes.
Then again, I was upset at Pitcher of the Year last year when Putnam took it over his teammate Fetter, despite Fetter being statistically better in almost every category.

Barn Floor
Please tell me that it will still be a raised floor! The raised floor is so unique and I absolutely love it. You always hear people saying that it is dangerous, but unless I can’t recall anybody getting seriously injured because of it.

remove the word “unless” from my post and it makes more sense

I'm 99% sure it is going to remain raised

Barn Memories
1) Minnesota almost beating Indiana in what I remember was Indiana’s 31-0 season
2) Before the remodel, bringing in a 12-pack and drinking it at halftime with my friends in one of the band rooms on the mezzanine
3) Playing intramural games on the floor and hitting a few 3-pointers
4) Attending many, many games with my father (without the beer)

My top 3 experiences
1 – I was very little and cried when Goldy came over to me. That gopher is rather scary.
2 – was Purdue coming to town with Glen “Big Dawg” Robinson to take on a Voshon Leonard led Gopher squad. I was about 7 rows up across from the Gopher bench. It was awesome.
3 – best experience was the Final Four team. Iowa was coming to town with visions of upsetting the Gophers, but Sam Jacobson had a monster game (30+ points as I recall, but I could be wrong) and ended +15 on the 2nd place Hawkeyes.
