The Daily Nugz - asks a question

Which incoming newcomer for the Gopher basketball program will have the biggest impact o the 2009-2010 season?

You can vote below but we are requiring that you also post a comment as to why you voted for who you did.  I think you can make a pretty strong argument for any of the four newcomers potentially having the biggest impact.  White is a top 50 player with a Big Ten body, Williams is probably the most athletic & best defender, Mbwake could be a beast at a true PF and Cobbs might give us a a great back up PG affording the move of Joseph to SG.

None of the above

because Al Nolen won’t pass them the ball.

Gotta be Royce

The Gophers were in desperate need of a go-to scorer last year, so much so, in fact, that we had to resort to giving the ball to Westbrook in crunch time. Nothing against Lawrence, but I think Royce is a much more polished scorer, and I predict by the end of the year, that he’ll be The Guy at the end of the game.

good point

Westbrook is just not capable of being a reliable go-to scorer at this level.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

I voted Rodney

I think we have untapped potential here and Rodney will be bigger than we are all anticipating. His offense will come later, but defensively he will be a rock-star from day one earning him lots of PT.

Mbakwe

He is older and ready to contribute immediately. From what I hear he plays good defense, is a good rebounder, can score, and does the intangibles well (all of which mean Tubby will give him PT). He will get the most minutes (of these 4 guys) this season and will be an impact player immediately. I think Royce will be a close second.

I voted Cobbs

The easiest arguments probably are for Royce and Rodney because of the hype surrounding them or Mbakwe because of his experisnce. But I think the Gophers have a desperate need at the PG position. Nolen is a decent player and is exceptional on defense but struggled mightily to get the Gophers into any sort of rhythm.

Cobbs could be a scoring type of point guard that the team desperately needs.

I Voted 4 Royce

He has a talent level above the other Gophers.

I think Royce will be the best of this class when we look back on it in 4 years

But next year I think Mbakwe will be the biggest factor of the 3. He was dominating juco ball (I realize dominating juco isn’t that big of a deal) but he was a double-double machine – averaged 16 points and 13 boards per game.

Trevor Mbwake

This shouldn’t even be close. Trevor is older, has previous D1 experience at Marquette, and has a skill set the Gophers need ASAP. The others on the list may all have more potential, but I have to believe Trevor is the closest to being “Big 10 Ready.” A man amongst boys.

Agree

Trevor should be the most ready to contribute next year.
