Golden Nugz for 06-16-09

Summer is here and it is just a matter of time before the Howard Pulley Pro-City League starts up again.  For those of you who do not know this is great summer league for mostly local professionals (NBA, NBDL, Europe, etc) and D1/D2 players.  Guys like Kahlid El-Amin, Kamron Taylor and Troy Hudson played last year against Al Nolen Blake Hoffarber, Damien Johnson and the host of newcomers on last year's roster.

I went to a night of games last year to get a look at Sampson, Iverson, Bostick and Joseph.  The games have little defense as you can imagine but it is a great way to get a glimpse of what we will see on the new Barn floor next year.  Marcus Fuller has posted what Gophers will be playing with each other.

Team El-Amin Fishhouse (defending league champs)

  • Paul Carter and Devron Bostick (and Travis Busch)

Troy Hudson's Enterprises

  • Royce White (no Gopher teammates playing on White's team)

The TRP Group

  • Ralph Sampson, Justin Cobbs, Damien Johnson

Errol Carlstrom Playaz

  • Trevor Mbwake and Devoe Joseph

A&A Millwork

  • Al Nolen and Colton Iverson

B2X

  • Blake Hoffarber, Lawrence Westbrook, Rodney Williams and walkon Dominique Dawson

It is important to note that the rosters are kind of fluid but to start with if you take a look at this summer's schedule and look for the above teams.  I urge you to go, the games are free and it is athletic basketball.  Like I mentioned above it is not full of defense but I learned early on that Bostick could not shoot from the outside and that Iverson was going to be a tough player on the inside.

Silly.

That’s a nice way for Davis to get around recruiting rules, by putting his own kid at CDH. That’s just silly.

And, it won’t mean a lick if the Gophers go 4-8 this year and if USC (which Walters wrote is heavily recruiting Seantrel) goes 11-1. Again.

I didn't post it

but he may be sending his kid there for more than Seantrel. Maybe he feels it is a good school, maybe it is because he wants his kid to get good football exposure, maybe it is recruiting related but it is more than SH and he just wants to build a better relationship with the coaching staff. Whatever the case I doubt he is using his kid and forcing him to CDH against his will strictly to get Seantrel.

Well.....

….it seems like Davis is moving his family here from California (according to his bio, that’s where they lived – they didn’t move to Bama? Funny). So, putting his kid in CDH makes sense if it’s his first stop.

Don’t be naive – everything is done, by everyone, for a specific reason. There are no coincidences here. Davis could send his kid to Eden Prairie or Stillwater or Breck. He’s going there so his Dad, and the Gophers by proxy, has an “in” at a Notre Dame feeder school, especially this year, when it is so important.

you think so?

I’ll choose to believe that there is more to it than just recruiting. Why don’t all of the coaches have their kids strategically placed at EP, CDH and whatever other power school they want? When it comes to their kids and families I’ll choose to believe that recruiting help is just a bonus here. My bet is they live on the east side and would rather send their kids to CDH than a StP public school.

Or...

maybe Cretin is recruiting his son? :)

Cmon

Oh JG, while he might get a bit of an “in” to CDH and the coaches, don’t think all those coaches and players (notably Seantrel) haven’t seen all the stops pulled out for them. Heaven only knows what sort of “offers” have been sent Seantrel’s way. I’m not sure a coaches son, who could be more liability then benefit, is being expected to help much from CDH players realm.

Why is everyone so naive?

Brewster is betting the farm on Seantrel. NCAA coaches are limited in contacting recruits during certain times of the year. Having a kid in the school allows a coach to “accidentally” show up at the school. Oh, hi Seantrel!! Good to see you. Will you be at the game Saturday? Tubby will be there, he’d like to say hi to you.

If you DON’T think arrangements happen (Perry Watson to Michigan, Gus Malzahn to Tulsa, and on and on), c’mon. I realize Minnesota fans aren’t used to the shenanigans involved in college recruiting. This is a page out of the recruiting manual – find a way to gain added contact with a high powered recruit that isn’t illegal.

Who was the first on this site to say the spread was dead and that Dunbar was going to get thrown out after Davis was hired? Oh yeah, me. Don’t be so naive Gopher fans. Everything people in power do is calculated with the end result in mind.

should have been

Gus Malzahn to Arkansas (with Damien Williams and Mitch Mustain).

I believe they'll use it to their advantage fully

but I’m still choosing to be naive on this one that things like education for their son and/or getting him into a football factory for his own football career were more of the motivating factors. While Seantrel is incredibly valuable I also believe these guys are not shortsighted enough to be “using” their kids for the one time shot at a great recruit.

While I would hope he wouldn't enroll his kid at CDH simply for recruiting...

I wouldn’t put it past him. I am sure Brewster mentioned that it may be a good idea to check out CDH. I think everyone knows that landing Seantrel would speak volumes about the recruiting job Brewster and his staff are doing and would help him keep his job. Obviously the recruiting has been much better under Brew, but if Seantrel heads to another school, he will hear the critics. That probably isn’t fair, but it is reality.

Right on GN

Pat on the back JG, great work. : / I agree it may be calculated, but perhaps its just more for the school as a whole than ultimately Seantrel. While every little bit helps, Seantrel certainly is seeing it all.

Let's also not forget that....

….if this chain occurs -

Davis sends son to CDH.
Davis continues recruiting Seantrel.
Davis gets Seantrel to Minnesota.
Minnesota has dominant offensive line.

Davis likely gets job promotion (at Minnesota, or in NFL, or other big time program), which equals large increase in pay.

There can be more than just one specific reason, however.

This topic reminds me of something my dad told me when I was younger… “When you assume, you make an ass out of u and me.”

"If we got to we're going to crawl in this locker room. And on our back is going to be an axe..."
