Where Are They Now?

Every college football program in America will lose players that either don't qualify for academic reasons, transfer, or leave the team for other reasons.  Minnesota is no exception.  Many of their names are never again heard after their departure.  Ever wonder which former Gophers could still be playing for the team, and whether or not they would have added depth to the current squad?  Following is a list of former Gophers, where they are now, and what kind of season they are having so far.  Click on their highlighted names to view their player profile pages on the websites of their current teams:

Name P School Yr. (if a Gopher) Notes
Otis Hudson OT Eastern Illinois Sr. 6'5 331 lb. Hudson is a starting right tackle
Alex Daniels DL Cincinnati Sr. Daniels is a force on the Bearcats' defense
Tramaine Brock S Belhaven College Sr. Brock has 10 tackles and .5 sacks this season
E.J. Jones CB Illinois State Sr. Jones already has 3 interceptions and 15 tackles
Hasan Lipscomb RB Blinn College? Fr. Listed in Blinn's Media guide, but is not on the web roster and doesn't have stats for the first 2 games
Roszell Gayden OT College of the Sequioas So. A 4 star JUCO recruit, may still come back to Minnesota
Clint Brewster QB Tennessee Tech So. Hasn't played yet, but another backup QB with a few years in the program couldn't have hurt the Gophers
Brodrick Smith WR Kansas State So. Transfer year - will not play
Ralph Spry WR Auburn Jr. Transfer year - will not play
Tray Herndon WR Vanderbilt Jr. 1 reception for 17 yards this season
Vince Hill WR ? So. On the Temple squad last year, no longer on their online roster
Tim McGee DT Memphis Sr. Backup defensive lineman for the Tigers
Willie Dyson DL NW Missouri St. Jr. No statistics this season
Justin Chatman CB North Texas Jr. No statistics this season
Tommy Becker LB St. Thomas Sr. Very good Division 3 linebacker

I'll put together a similar post around mid-season, and one more at the end of the season.  If I missed any players that are on other teams, let me know in the comments section.  My own take is that Minnesota could have benefitted from having Otis Hudson and Roszell Gayden as options at tackle, E.J. Jones and Tramaine Brock as additional defensive backs, Alex Daniels as a defensive end, and Clint Brewster as an experienced backup quarterback.  Reasons for player departures aside, what do you think?

very cool

Nice research, suggestion: a rating for the impact they have had, maybe a star rating.

This is really nice, a more informative version of Sid’s notes column.

Where are they now?

Two others to look up, Walker Ashly (or was it Ashly Walker), Willie Mobley?. BS

Willie Mobley

is transferring from Ohio State to UCLA.

Ashley and Mobley

never committed to the Gophers, if I’m not mistaken. I’m focusing on players that actually intended to play here. Another example, Eric Stephens, is starting at running back for Texas Tech. He decommitted from MN prior to signing day (likely because Lipscomb was also in the class), so I didn’t consider him for this analysis.

Including Mobley, Ashley, Floyd, and others from Minnesota could be a good future post. The only ones who’ve left recently and done anything worthwhile, as far as I know off the top of my head, are Floyd and Gilreath.

If you're willing to extend

“recently” back about five years, you can add James Laurenaitis (sp) to that list.

Finding the Right Fit

While it would have been nice to have Daniels finish at MN- we all know why he had to leave. Brock is the real sad case – since he just did not pull his academic weight and is the only true proven impact player on this list. Glad to see some of the other guys get to play somewhere in college – but as you can see, they probably found the right place for themselves or the story is not yet finished for some.

Not the only

Daniels would of been a beast as a DE, Mason kept messing with him putting him at RB and stuff but he was a great athlete. Losing Jones also hurt dude could straight up hit i remember when he knocked out Small the Ohio St reciever and he was laying on his back with his arms in the air like a dead scorpion. That rape case really decimated us in 07 losing our 2 best players on the defensive side. Both would have graduated last year though because of the transfer they were inelegible for 1 year and thus are seniors now.

No question

in my mind that I would love to have Brock and Daniels out on the field. Daniels is a physical specimen and not surprised he is a major factor in Cinncy’s success this year. And Brock I would trade for Royston anyday. Oh well, all part of CFB.

Brock for Royston?

I think these guys are a pretty even swap. Brock may have been slightly faster, but he also had a tendency to bite on the play action or pass fake. Royston appears to be more fundamentally sound. Both are great tacklers. The biggest issue, in my opinion, is that beyond Royston and Theret there is very little depth. Dandridge and Rallis may be good, but they’re young and unproven.

Royston looked poor

on that 50 yard pass in quarter one. He was 5 yards behind the WR giving safety help.

Rallis is not only young and unproven, but has a broken leg bone, and is done for the year.

Shane Potter transfer again?

After doing well last year, he is not showing up in South Dakota stats for 2009. After Gordy took off, did Shane leave?

Also, what ever happened to Sean McWhirter? He was a highly regarded recruit at one time.

by Garrick on Sep 23, 2009 12:24 PM CDT reply actions

Looked for McWhirter

and couldn’t find him anywhere. I thought he was at a MAC school, but he didn’t show up in searches. Also MIA are Harold Howell, Vince Hill, and Hasan Lipscomb – he isn’t showing up on the Blinn College roster (just in the media guide).

Some players

Like Hasan and Vince Hill, could they still become gophers later on? Neither seem to be playing right now so they arnt using up eligiblity and both were highly regarded 4 star prospects. Anyone think the Gophers might get these guys in Minnesota some day?
