Locking Down the Borders?
I came across an interesting article written by Buck Bravo in 2008 regarding how well Minnesota has done in keeping the top 5 rated players each year in MN. From 2003-2006 Mason kept 2 out of the top 20 kids at home (10%). I didn't personally realize it was that bad.
Brewster from 2008-2010 has kept 6 of the top 15 at home (40%). He has also picked up two of those from the 2006 class for Mason. (Carufel and Royston) Hmmnnn, same number as Mason.
By comparison, Wisconsin manages to keep 60% or more of their top 5 talent and they were landing better than 10% of the top 5 MN recruits during the Mason years.
We have seen improvement in this area, not to the degree we would like, but considerable improvement. Part of that is no doubt the TCF Bank stadium, but you also have to bive Brewster credit for the effort he and his staff put into recruiting. It will take winning to make a big improvement on that number and I think we would all wecome that.

I trust your numbers
But the perception won’t change until Brewster lands the big one and unfortunately he’s let the two big name MN recruits slip away since coming here — Floyd and Henderson.

You can't possibly
blame him for Floyd. Brewster was hired during the recruiting process. The fact that we were even in the discussion was a miracle.
...
I don’t know enough about the situation to blame him or give him a pass on Floyd. But the perception is that Brewster hasn’t been able to get the top MN kids because he hasn’t landed the big names kids and that includes Floyd—even if Narby is correct that in comparison to Mason, Coach Brew is doing a better job keeping the locals at home.

he had a full year to land Floyd
the 2007 class was the one he barely had any time to recruit. Floyd was class of 2008.

Not nearly on their level, but how about also including that WR that picked Clemson over us a couple years ago. I think he was a high 4 star recruit and top in the state. So despite the quantity of Minnesota recruits brought in, Brew has failed to give us any quality. I’d personally trade every single Minnesota kid currently on the roster to have those 3 top guys mentioned.
Bryce McNeal - 2009 class
That was a big whiff. McNeal was a 4-star (not exactly a “high” 4-star). It is one thing to lose out to Notre Dame, Ohio State or USC; but losing your state’s top ranked player to Clemson is not a good thing. Supposedly it came down to the McNeal family being drawn to the Clemson coach’s Christian faith.
Everybody chooses their college for a different reason. Brew should have repented and been baptized in the McNeal’s church.

next year doesn't look too good either
I’ve heard and/or read that two guys who will be top 5 in the state are Badger fans. Westerhouse and James Farrow. This is WAY early but looks like Olson will be the #1 kid in the state (he’s already committed) and then those two guys are going to be top 5 and my early line has them as future Badgers.
On the bright side I think there will be more in state players who are going to be BCS level players than the last couple years.

List of MN kids for 2011
This list is REALLY early but here are the local kids who are getting interest from other BCS schools…
OL-Tommy Olson (Mahtomedi) – verbally committed
QB-Brian Athley (Eden Prairie) – FSU, Ind, Mizz, NU, WV, Wis
LB-Peter Westerhouse (Chanhassen) – Iowa, ISU, Kan, OSU, UCLA, Wis
RB-Reggie Gandy (DeLeSalle) – Alabama, Iowa, Neb, UCLA, Wis
OL – Ross Windfeldt (St. Cloud) – Alabama, Iowa, Miami, Neb, OK St, Stanford, UCLA, Wis
DE – Torsten Rotto (Woodbury) – Harvard, ISU, Neb, NU, Stanford
QB – Jake Quast (Woodbury) – Iowa, Neb, Wis
DB – James Farrow (Minnetonka) – Iowa, Mich, Wis
RB – Tyler Evans (Pipestone) – Michigan
DB – DeAndre Cunningham (Osseo) – Ohio St
that’s 10 kids who are getting interest from major programs. 2011 should be a good test of Brewster’s ability to keep the state’s best here. I’m guessing the top 3 will be Olson, Westerhouse and Windfeldt.

I’m assuming all the kids on the list also have MN somewhere on the list even though you failed to mention it, right? There’s no way none of them are considering UofM.
right
They all have interest in or from Minnesota.

excep the last two
Rivals did not show any MN interest in those two but I’m assuming either MN is and it’s just not in their database or MN will be if Michigan and Ohio State are interested.
Also keep in mind that this is WAY early for 2011 recruiting. Having “interest” might just mean the kid got a letter from Michigan and he then told Rivals that Michigan is interested. That list will certainly change and when they start getting offers that will be more telling than anything.
