Revisiting Tubby vs. Brewster Debate
A couple of months ago I argued that Tubby hasn't really done much more for MN BB than Brewster has for football and it was met with allegations of me sniffing glue or having no knowledge of sports whatsoever. I can't help but wonder if everyone feels as strongly at this moment that there is no contest between the two. Our FB team finished 7th and 8th the last 2 years. Conversely or BB team finished 7th and is currently ranked 8th this year and it is likely they will finish 8th.
We have also seen questionable coaching this year (ie... pressing teams that are more athletic, still running an offense where the players stand around, and forcing the ball inside when we are turning it over more than scoring by doing that). I have never questioned the "heart" of any of Brewster's teams like I have of this BB team either.
For those that attacked my delusionality or sports acumen, I will be accepting apologies below and I personally vow not to bring it up again.

Tubby is better than Brewster
The problem is people were deifying Tubby, when reality is he is just a good coach. After Izzo, Tubby is in a group of about 5-6 good coaches. Over time he will have teams overperform (last season) and underperform (this season). But unlike the Monson teams, at least we rightfully have hope and expectations.
the comparison may be slightly closer
but
1-the comparison is ridiculous.
2-it is only even remotely close if you look at this one season where Brewster managed to hit expectations of mediocrity and Tubby’s team failed to live up to expectations of being good.
But over their Gopher careers it still isn’t close. Tubby has beat teams he should not have, he has done more than his team’s talent should have allowed, when it mattered he kept the best in-state kids here and he himself has raised the profile of his team nationally as well as brought in more $$ to the athletic department just because of who he is.
Brewster has benefited more from the new stadium than the athletic dpartment has.

Did Tubby
beat anyone he shouldn’t have this year? I don’t think so, but I don’t think it means as much in basketball to upset a superior team. I’m behind Tubby all the way, I am 5 years away from even thinking he should be fired, but he has yet to show me much in the way of getting his guys to overachieve.
"they're calling insane hogs???"
not this year
but everything that has gone wrong this year has gone wrong.
Tubby’s win over Louisville is far greater than Brewster beating Michigan State at home or Illinois on the road.

Louisville win
didn’t Louisville play within 24 hours of that game? It was still a great win, but you have to temper it with how tired Louisville must have been.
I think Brewster’s best game was the Iowa game last season, we played really well on defense.

How quickly we forget 55-0. Let’s not be so dramatic (pot to kettle here).
You can really confuse me sometimes JG, can you elaborate further on your point?

he's saying it is pretty easy to question
the heart of Brewters team in the 0-55 debacle.

Well..
Tubby seems to have ended this argument dramatically again.
I'm sure there will be some excuse
like Leuer just coming back from a broken wrist, reffing, etc. In any event, I will still give Brewster another year and withhold judgement.

with that win
he proved himself a motivator and coach in a big game when the season was on the verge of melting down.

Let Em play
Why is it that the two coaches being discussed get our hopes up every year with “high profile” recruits only to drag us through the same old rigamaroo every year. Shortly after we secure the commitments of the athletes it becomes evident how we got these guys. We get them because the top tier programs realize these kids are either “projects” or they are clearly gonna be ineligible for at least 1 year. Then we get to hear how great of recruiters they are when really all they are doing is picking up the players facing jail time or academic ineligibility. So two solutions, 1- Let them play (Trevor Mbakwe, Royce White, Al Nolen) or 2- Find lesser recruits who play with heart and intensity (Eric Decker, Marion Barber, maybe even throw in Blake Hoffarber.)
