Golden Nugz 2.22.10

Finally a good week and weekend for Gopher sports.  I'll start with the opening weekend for Gopher Baseball.

Fzljxgzjnkupjpv

A three-game set with Akron ended with two wins and a frustrating loss in the middle.

Game 1 - Juniors Seth Rosin and Scott Fern combined for a 6-0 shutout

Game 2 - Gophers leave 9 men on base and lose 4-2.

Game 3 - Mike Kvasnicka's walk-off solo homerun sealed the 1-0 victory.

Kvasnicka had two home runs on the weekend but it was pitching that stuck out this weekend.  Rosin, Fern, Allen Bechstein, Billy Stoule, Phil Isakkson and TJ Oakes combined for 20 2/3 inning of shutout baseball.

Next weekend the competition picks up in the Big East / Big Ten Challenge.  St. John's, UCONN and Louisville are more talented than Akron and it should be a very good test for the Gophers.

Not too late

for Tubby’s team if we run the table.

sure

but that is asking an awful lot. To beat Wisconsin, Purdue and go to Illinois in the span of two weeks is tough. Had we held on to the MSU, @Ind or @NU games (or two of those) then we’d have some margin for error.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

yeah

most likely NIT, but at least they would have a decent shot of winning the NIT. Would be a nice sendoff for the seniors.

Bracketology 101

http://bracketology101.blogspot.com/ has them in the tourney right now… I disagree, the RPI is too low, but they seem to think going 1-1 next week, 2-0 the week after and winning a big 10 tourney game is enough.

If we don't run the table

then we need to win at least 2 in the BT Tourney.

Baseball

Great to see Kyle Knudsen doing some hitting this early in the season, but like I stated in the comments section from the baseball preview, he won’t be behind the plate anytime soon. Kurt Schlangen played the first two games, while Kvasnicka played the Sunday game.

Justin Gominsky got only one at-bat due to a bad wheel. Brooks Albrecht (3-for-5 in game one, 0-for-6 with three Ks in game 2/3) started in CF in his place. Trip Schultz also had a couple of hits which was a nice surprise.

Missed Petterson on Sunday as he was ejected after arguing the final strike on Saturday. The Gophers need every veteran bat in the lineup to win games.

Great pitching. Rosin and Fern were dominant Friday, Oakes looked great in his collegiate debut Saturday and Bechstein/Soule/Issakson were outstanding on Sunday. Isaakson is the one to watch for since he is a lefty. If he pitches well, they could move Luke Rasmussen back into the bullpen.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless

FILE -- This is an Oct. 18, 2008 file photo showing Connecticut corner back Jasper Howard (6) trying to get the crowd into the game during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against Rutgers, in Piscataway, N.J. Jasper Howard had his little sisters' names tatooed on his chest. His friends say it was a constant reminder of why he was at U Conn _ to provide his family with a better life than the one he had in Miami's Little Haiti. (AP Photo/Mel Evans, File) link
