Golden Gophers vs. the NCAA Selection Committee - OPEN THREAD

Here is your chance to talk about our seed, our oppononent or lack of a seed and opponent.  We did an awful lot to play our way into the Tournament, but didn't grab the automatic bid.  It was probably enough but we'll find out very soon.

I wouldn't be worried but we just lost by 29.

Will we get in over Florida, Illinois, Va. Tech or an Illinois team that took OSU to OT? I’m nervous.

Illinois took them to overtime

But they didn’t win. They didn’t beat michigan st. or purdue either. If Illinois gets in instead of us it will be a travesty.

by mnbrewer on Mar 14, 2010 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

NO WAY

Illinois gets in ahead of us.

1 – we beat them in Illinois
2 – we have a higher RPI
3 – we have a few more wins
4 – we have a tougher SOS

Don't look at the Big Ten standings though.

That said, I think we are ahead of Illinois. Miss. St., Cal. & Va Tech are a different story.

B10 standings don't always matter

Penn State was out last year and finished ahead of both Minnesota and Michigan.

I think we are in, I'm looking at seeding

4 or 5 seeds we could face…

Vandy, Tenn, Butler, Temple, New Mexico

I’m OK with a couple of those.

Bracketology 101

is the self-proclaimed most accurate bracket projection (they have numbers to back it up).

They have us in as an 11 seed! That would be incredible. That may have been before the final 29 point differential.

ya

I think we were in or out before the game (especially with a 3 point game at halftime). Our seeding may have moved though. Imagine if we had won, our seed should really be different than it will be now.

Bracket Matrix has us a 12 seed. Vandy, Maryland, Butler look like the most likely 1st round matchups.

my money is on a Butler rematch.

by eazydp on Mar 14, 2010 5:42 PM CDT reply actions

I don’t know anything about Xavier but I really like our chances, just based on team defense – any team that defends that well as a unit (2nd half today notwithstanding) has a chance anytime.

I'm feverished, or the way you want to spell it

by plinytheelder on Mar 14, 2010 5:46 PM CDT reply actions

Xavier plays very good defense

Jordan Crawford is a 6-4 guard who averages 19.7 ppg. Then they have two guys averaging just under 12 ppg.

by GopherNation on Mar 14, 2010 5:59 PM CDT reply actions

Xavier

Seems like their strength is PG and SG. Look for Iverson and Damian Johnson to have a big day. I like our chances as we are playing really well as a team. We have 3 pt shooters and can score inside, We don’t match up well with really athletic NBA type bodies like Turner though. I think Xavier has played a much easier schedule and we should win this one the way we are playing now. Pound it inside.

by Narby on Mar 14, 2010 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

A Home Game?

You think Milwaukee will be like a home game? So now you’re happy to travel to Wisconsin? After all the ill will you speak of Wisconsin on this site? Badger fans will show up en masse to cheer for Xavier. There won’t be a single ticket left after UM sells out of theirs. I hope you’re all students cause no one else from Minnesota is getting in that building. We’re gonna be their sixth man. We’ll be all over the refs for every call against our beloved Musketeers. You’ll be wishing you treated us and our beautiful state a little kinder. Home game…….bah. ;)

It is difficult to type sarcasm but I thought the little slanted smiley on the end might have implied it better. Yes, yes, we will be rooting for all Big Ten teams in the tourney until we face one. I just thought it was funny that Minnesotans think that driving through Wisconsin is like being tortured but it is still like a ‘home game’ when the Goophs are there. I don’t think that Milwaukee hates UW Madison. All the Milwaukee papers cover the Badgers pretty extensively. As far as recruiting, it seems that more Madison kids end up at Marquette and the Badgers get a good share of Milwaukee kids a la Landry, and Devin Harris.

I knew you were kidding

but driving through Wisconsin does suck. I do it 5 or 6 times a year, including this weekend!

Is it even possible to have a closer first round game? Des Moines or Madison I guess could host but they typically don’t and they are basically just as close as Milwaukee.

Hey serious question here, isn’t Milwaukee more “home territory” for the Gophers than for the Badgers? I thought they were all Marquette fans there and didn’t like the Badgers.
