Big Ten Tournament - Gophers vs. Indiana

The six seeded Hoosiers took care of the number three seed, Northwestern yesterday 5-0. Last year the Hoosiers beat the Gophers twice in the Big Ten Tournament on their way the tournament championship.  On paper this pitching matchup looks to strongly favor the Gophers and hopefully Indiana will not be so fortunate.

Indiana will throw a freshman pitcher on the bump to face our ace, Seth Rosin.

The Hoosiers will bring freshman Jonny Hoffman to the mound while the Golden Gophers will throw junior Seth Rosin. Rosin, with a 7-4 record and a 4.74 ERA, was named Second-Team All-Big Ten. Hoffman sports a 2-2 record with 9.00 ERA in 14 appearances this season.

Pitching isn't what got Indiana to this point, it has been their hitting.  Sophomore Alex Dickerson was the league's player of the year and as a team the Hoosiers finished first in several hitting categories.

  • Batting Avg
  • Slugging %
  • Runs
  • Hits
  • Doubles
  • HRs (by a lot!)

So despite the fact that they are throwing a pitcher win an ERA of 9.00, there is reason to believe they'll be in this game.  BUT...they are facing Seth Rosin!  The mighty Rosin didn't flinch when facing this lineup earlier in the season.  Rosin pitched 7 2/3 innings without giving up a run, only three hits and notched seven strikeouts in a 14-0 Gopher win.  On the other hand Hoffman did get one of his two wins when the Hoosiers beat the Gophers 2-7 in game two of their series.

All of that to say this should be a good game and one you can see on the Big Ten network at 6:00 PM.

I’m almost shocked they didn’t bump Matt Carr up for this start. I guess Carr is still getting back to full strength, so might as well stick with the usual 1-2-3 starting rotation.

On top of that, Hoffman did get the win against the Gophers during their regular season meeting. Wasn’t a great start, but it got the job done. Tracy Smith might be banking on similar results.
