Daily Nugz 8.26.2010
"There's no such thing as soy milk. It's soy juice." -- Lewis Black
We are officially within a week of game day! This is really exciting stuff. And this... is your Daily Nugz.
- Retired Stillwater head football coach George Thole prognosticates on the upcoming Gopher season. I'll say this: I hope he's right.
"In conclusion, SI and Lindy's Sports be damned. I see the Gophers going 7-6 with the Insight Bowl
victory." - Blah, blah, blah Dwight Dasher. Blah, blah, blah Oliver Donnell. Blah, blah, blah Colin Boss. Stolen checks this, gambling debts that... the MTSU QB is still in hot water.
- Hey everyone, Kent Youngblood wrote about the Gophers! Nice. Youngblood has a nice article about 1960 championship Gopher squad.
- On Sunday Dave Revsine, of the BTN, tweeted this:
On bus heading to UW - final stop! I leave MN thinking they have the clearest identity they have under Brew - they know who they want to be.BTNDaveRevsine
He doesn't say what their identity is, just that he feels like they have one. After seeing this I started to write an entire post on what Revsine was talking about, but I just ended up rambling on and on and I never could come to a conclusion of what their identity is, so I decided to spare you my bumbling.
- Fringe Bowl Team Blog has their fall camp breakdown of the offense.
- Lastly, Adam Rittenberg of ESPN's Big Ten Blog, was on ESPN1500 with Reusse & Mackey on Wednesday (go to August 25th, Hour 2). They talk Big Ten realignment, N'Western players being affectionate with each other, Adam Weber, the possibility that Wisconsin is overrated, and Reusse even says that he can't believe the Gophs are going to be as horrible this season as the national media thinks... which is about as close to a compliment as we can expect Pat to pay the Gophers.

We know what they want to be
the question is, do the Gophers have the horses to be it?? “Pound the Rock” sounded good preseason last year but we know how that turned out. My outlook continues to swing from a disaster of a year to 6-6.
Leaning toward a disaster year
They will be better than 1-11 but it will not be a winning season. The defense just has too many gaping holes. They essentailly have just one cornerback. LBs are inexperienced. Safeties lack speed. Any opponent with a decent QB will roll up 400 yds passing on them without breaking a sweat.
"gaping holes"? "LB's are inexperienced"?
Really? 4 LB’s projected to get the bulk of playing time this season are Rallis, Cooper, Tinsley, and Reeves. Rallis was hurt last year, but the other 3?
Cooper played in all 13 games
Tinsley played in all 13 games
Reeves played in 9 games
If your only criteria for being inexperienced is that they weren’t starters last year then fine, you’re right, but in my opinion to say the group is inexperienced is just lazy.

Inexperienced
Mike Rallis is considered our best LB and he played in just 3 games, started none and had just 6 tackles the entire season. And, he never played the position in high school or college previously. Use any definition of inexperienced, the shoe still fits.
the shoe fits for Rallis
but I don’t think you can say it fits for the rest of the LB group.
