Minnesota Golden Gophers at Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders - OPEN THREAD

Minnesota Golden Gophers at Middle Tenn. St. Blue Raiders, Sep 2, 2010 6:30 PM CDT

Welcome to the first open thread of the 2010 season.  As most of you know this is the forum to vent, gloat, rant, rave and celebrate Gopher football.  We start on the road vs. the Sun Belt favorites minus their offensive weapon, Dwight Dasher.

Openthread_medium

Let's get it on.

You don't have to wait for the game to start, give us your predictions for the game and share you anticipation with the rest of us.

I would LOVE to see the Gophs hang 34 on the Blue Raiders

Did we score 34 points total last year? Ok we did, but it sure didn’t seem like it. I am so ready for a new season and a new and improved offense.

Took Gophers at pick-em for $50. Conservative bet for me but hard to argue that this is a bad bet.

I expect a few mistakes from the younger players, but they’ll pull it out.

Did I hear right? Did the MTSU coach say he hopes the Gophers are used to cold weather, and the heat will screw them up?

Does he really think it’s COLD in Minnesota in August and September?

by GoAUpher on Sep 2, 2010 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Smart... look at the Alabama's and the Florida's...

UF hasn’t played an OOC game outside the state of Florida in 15 years.

by Moojenowski on Sep 2, 2010 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

In other words...

Playing big out of conference games does absolutely nothing for you when it comes to BCS implications… Beat no ones, win your conference games go to big bowl games… OSU is a prime example of this.

by Moojenowski on Sep 2, 2010 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea. At least Big 10 teams are willing to travel.

The avg distance to NC away games for SEC schools is like 200 miles or less.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you The Daily Gopher

by GopherNation on Sep 2, 2010 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Bama is going to destroy Penn St

The point I’m making is that there is no reason to play those big out of conference games.

by Moojenowski on Sep 2, 2010 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions

There's no reason to play anyone else, though...

Why should they fill their non conference schedule with tough games?

by Moojenowski on Sep 2, 2010 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

the game's don't necessarily have to be tough

Like look at the Gophers…Middle is a formidable foe, USC, New Mexico State…

by TonyO on Sep 2, 2010 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

The Gophers have enough to worry about in their conference schedule

No need to schedule the USC’s…

What I’m saying is that bigger schools, like UF, don’t schedule tough out of conference games and they’re always in big bowl games because non conference games don’t matter, just win and it gets you far. There is absolutely no advantage to playing a huge non conference game if you’re an established program.

One more year of Bowden would have set us back a couple more years

He wanted Amato at DC, which would have been a complete joke…

You should read some of the stuff that has come out since our new coaches got here. Running backs were never taught what the offensive line was doing, one quote from a DT, “Yeah it’s crazy, you know, we can’t just go hang out in the weight room anymore, we actually have to do stuff.”

I’d rather fake a play that has owned their defense all game and find an open receiver.

really nothing wrong with the pass

I have 2 questions for everyone...

how pleased are you with 10/17 150 yards by Weber (no INTs and started 0/3, 10/14 the rest of the way)?

how pleased are you with the defense? They stunk in 2nd qtr but slowed down the MTSU offense the rest of the way?

what you say here can, and will, be used against you The Daily Gopher

by GopherNation on Sep 2, 2010 9:35 PM CDT reply actions

They both made adjustments when needed.

Props to the defense, Weber had the running game to lean on. He’s going to need to tighten his game for the rest of the schedule because the run game isn’t going to be there every game.

by Moojenowski on Sep 2, 2010 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

not pleased....5th year guy

should be putting up pts….he was missing passes and throwing behind guys…all the best drives took the ball out of his hands and were run drives.

by DallasGopher on Sep 2, 2010 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions

not to mention

the field goal drive on 3rd down…Marquis never had a shade of separation and he just threw the ball….thats robotic…not a 5th QB move…should have looked to his 2nd option but just turned like a robot and pitched it to the corner.

by DallasGopher on Sep 2, 2010 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

ignore the fact that I often defend Weber, let's just talk about the play

but isn’t that fade play always “robotic?” Isn’t it always a two-step, throw to corner of end zone? you throw it high and right in the back corner where only your WR can get it. if there is no separation it isn’t the QBs fault but it lands harmlessly.

I realize Weber is highly criticized but that play wasn’t an example of how bad he was today.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you The Daily Gopher

by GopherNation on Sep 2, 2010 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

The fact that you dont know the workings of a fade

pattern worries me. It should look “robotic” when executed correctly. Obviously it was the WR that needs to separate, but the QB’s 2nd read is to see that the WR gets off the line. Pre snap he also has to read if they are playing man or up on the line where you then have a pre-snap option to check down or audible out of that play. Buts thats what a 5th year guy would do…our guy just ran the play as if it were a practice.

Initial Thoughts

Most times I watch the game on a slight delay so I can watch some of the game on the treadmill and skip commercials… So here are my initial thoughts….
1) I don’t care about anyone else’s stats this week, Jon Hoese needs to win Big 10 Offensive Player of the Week. To go what he has gone through this week and still have that determination (even in on special teams) was great to see.
2) Love the fact Horton stuck with the running game. Have no idea if the execution will work in the Big 10 though as those defensive guys will be able to match up with our big o-line. Bennett looked great, Kirkwood should move up to the #2 back.
3) Seriously, there isn’t one place kicker in Minnesota high schools each year that can’t kick a 40 yard FG? I had forgotten Ellestad didn’t have one last year either. If he can’t, find someone else.
4) Defense had ups and downs. Not enough pass rush without CB blitzes. Tackling on running plays was hit and miss.
5) In the first half I couldn’t tell that Weber was the senior QB and Kilgore was playing his first FBS game. I though Kilgore’s throws were more on the money. Weber improved in the 2nd half though.
6) O-Line can’t pass block very well… This will be a problem when we can’t run the ball and have to pass.

In the end, I think I learned a lot about our coaching philosophy, specifically on the offensive side of the ball, but I don’t think I learned how good the Gophers are or can be yet. Still, I’ll take the win on the road against a better than average non-conference cupcake bowl team. They are no Boise State but not bad.

Stud Kicker

Didnt we have a stud kicker out of Colorado somewhere recruited and he ended up dropping MN and going to UCLA? Would have been good to see what that kid could have done.
