The longest baseball road trip EVER [open thread]
This post originally bemoaned the Gophers getting roughed up,14-1, on February 18th by St. John's in the season opener for both teams, at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge in Clearwater, Florida. But then a fan commented about the Gophers coming back in their second game to beat Connecticut, and the road trip thread was on.
It's "the longest baseball road trip EVER," because the collapse of the Metrodome's roof caused the Gophers to extend their away games schedule with games originally scheduled at home. The team will play 23 straight road games in Florida, North Carolina, Arizona, and California, returning on April 1st to open its conference season against Purdue at the Twins' Target Field, where they will play their 12 Big Ten home games this season. Three non-conference home games will be played at Siebert Field.
During the epic cross-country journey, I encourage fans to stop by this thread to comment about the triumphs and travails of Gopher baseball.

Louisville knocks off Gophers 3-0
Our boys have managed to score 4 runs in 3 games. Is it the new bats? The unaccustomed sunshine in their faces? The overpowering pitching strength of the opposition? Or WHAT?
Gophers split first two games at Wake Forest (North Carolina) tourney
losing to the host Demon Deacons, 7-5, and beating Towson 6-4. The Gophers (2-3) are starting to produce some runs, so I’m hoping they will be ablle to dispatch Delaware State (1-4), tomorrow and even up their longest road trip EVER/season record at 3-3.
...performance at the plate
not to mention Austin Lubinsky’s performance on the mound, as the Gophers beat the Hornets 7-1.

South Alabama downs Minnesota 5-3
at the Dairy Queen Classic, which the Gophers are “hosting” far from home, in Tucson, Arizona. Not an auspicious beginning of the tourney for Minnesota (3-4), which faces Washington State (5-1) today.
Gophers come back to shutout Washington State 2-0
with starter Phil Isaksson and relievers Billy Soule and Scott Matyas combining to slam the door on a Cougar offense that had scored 29 runs in their previous four game win streak. WSU is one of the better Pac-12 teams, and had hammered a good Oklahoma State team 13-2 the day before. This Gopher pitching performance is arguably the best of the young season.
Cowboys pop Gopher bubble with 16-run outburst
Somebody explain the game of baseball to me. Please. How can Minnesota beat Washington State, the team that beat Oklahoma State 13-2 the day before, then turn around and lose to Oklahoma State 16-2? Why, it’s like anybody can beat anybody on a given day.
Oh, yeah, that’s it.
because it is baseball
it might be the one sport where lesser talented teams win more often than other sports.
The worst team in baseball last year had a .352 win%. The NBA currently has six teams worse than that.

Gophers roar back to .500 with 8-1 win over Gonzaga
Okay, let’s cross Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona off our itineraries. Minnesota baseball is now in Sacramento, California, where they feasted on Gonzaga pitchers for 13 hits and 8 runs today, evening up their season record at 5-5 in the process.
Today’s heroes at the plate were Kyle Geason (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) and Justin Gominsky (3-for-4, 2 RBIs). On the mound, TJ Oakes scattered 9 hits over 6 innings, giving up just 1 run, and Tom Windle shut the Bulldogs out in relief.
The Gophers play the Bulldogs tomorrow and Sunday, and then take on Sacramento State Tuesday and Wednesday, before catching a bus to Santa Clara.
...and Gophers roar back to sub-.500 with two losses to Gonzaga
The Zags (they really prefer that to “Bulldogs”) took apart the Gophers 10-3 on Saturday, and then they took the series with a 15-6 win on Sunday. All the game heroes wore blue and white, so you’ll not read about them on this website. Hopefully our team will recover from its 25-run weekend shellacking by Tuesday, when the 2-game series with Sac State gets underway.

Gophers take two games from Sac State, climb back to .500 for season
Get used to it. This season is turning into a roller coaster of wins and losses, heroes and chumps for our Gophers. After losing two to Gonzaga, Minnesota came back to take two from Sacramento State, 3-1 on Wednesday and 7-5 today. Let’s not get too excited, since the mini-series sweep was over a Hornet team that has managed just 4 wins in 18 games, and lifts the Gophers to a mediocre 7-7 record.
A hit batter and a wild pitch contributed to the Gophers scoring all three of their runs in the sixth inning yesterday, and today, the Gophers tied the game with a run in the ninth and then won it with two runs in the eleventh. Not exactly an overpowering performance against perhaps the weakest team Minnesota will face this season, but a win is a win, as the tautology goes.
On to Santa Clara.
Rain, rain, go away. I'm outta here, too.
Another game in California rained out. Last time it was Sacramento; this time it’s Santa Clara. The Gophers were supposed to be working on their tans, but there’s a lot of other things more important they need to work on if they’re going to put their mediocre .500 W-L record in the rearview mirror of the road trip bus.
I notice that this fanpost has fallen to the bottom of the DG’s side panel, so before it disappears completely, and in response to the lack of response to the road trip thread, I am bailing outta here.
Well, maybe I’ll start another at the top of the side panel, if it stops raining in California long enough for the Gophers to get a game or two in.
