Who Would You Rather Have Coaching Gopher Basketball?
With all of the angst over the recent Gopher basketball season, a lot of Gopher fans have voiced their frustrations with Tubby Smith (and staff). So I want to ask a simple question just to get a gauge on the pulse of Gopher Nation.
Is Tubby's tenure mediocre enough that we should be ready to move on? Or are we remembering Clem with revisionist history? There are some legit questions surrounding the current state of the program but we all know that Clem wasn't perfect either. So you tell me...
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE give us a reason for your vote in the comments. Getting 400 votes with 7 people telling us why they feel the way they do isn't very useful. Let your voice be heard.

Not even close
There are many reasons to be frustrated with Tubby Smith, but none of them involve a massive academic scandal. College student athletes are supposed to go to college to get an education along with playing sports. While idealistic, coaches should strive to have winning teams where every player graduates.
tubs
if he can figure out how to keep the kids from transferring and getting hurt, he would have had a much better record over the past couple years. honestly, who would replace him and be as good?
Meaningless to talk about right now
Tubby is our coach next year and I will support him. But next year this time could be a different story. I hope Tubby and staff find another gear and coach like their jobs and legacy depends on it.
Clem's been retired for several years now
I can’t imagine he’d even want the job.
Gret Article On Him In Chicago Magazine (April Issue)
Not online (yet). But I read it in my eye doctor’s office on Saturday morning.
(Brief summary) He’s very happy farming in KY. He was very moved by his recption by Gopher fans at 2009 reunion during game at The Barn. He still claims some of the NCAA violations are untrue.

Win or Lose
I’d rather have a coach who keeps kids in school and out of trouble.
When we get the Pig, the Jug and the Axe, we'll have one hell of a picnic
Coaching vs Running the program?
I’d rather have Clem “coaching”… those teams got up and down the floor and didn’t lose at Williams.
Running the program? Hands down, Tubby.

I Voted For Clem
In these polls, I always vote for choice on top of the list.

Clem
I was and still am embarrassed about the academic scandal. But from a basketball standpoint, Clem had something special in the way he navigated on-court success in an area where it’s difficult to win.
Unfortunately, you can’t only have half of the equation. The off-court stuff was a big problem. But the parade of talent through Williams Arena was pretty impressive – Burton, Leonard, Jacobson, Jackson. I’ll always have such a fond memory of Eric Harris-Bobby Jackson-Sammy J-Courtney James and John Thomas… again, ON the basketball court. Watching Gopher Hoops was never more exciting than that stretch.

What?
Clem was hardly a good coach. Sure, we often won at the Barn, but our overall records (with the exception of one year) were always very mediocre because he couldn’t beat anyone on the road. Tubby has a much better resume as a coach.
