That Felt Great - Gophers Go on the Road to Get Their First Big Ten Win

Boy did we need that. OK, maybe I needed that as I've been pretty down on this current club, but I am sure the Gopher locker room is a much more pleasant place to be than it has been over the last couple weeks.

The Gophers get a huge road win over a ranked Big Ten opponent ending a 10-game Big Ten losing streak.

Tubby made another lineup change and regardless of the outcome of the game, I think this is a lineup I can get behind. Joe Coleman remains a starter and Austin Hollins got back his starting role at the expense of Maverick Ahanmisi. I'm not proposing that we won because of the lineup change, but I do like it. Coleman is playing better in the starting role and Hollins responded great after his temporary relegation to the bench.

Those two are your stars of the game. Hollins scored 18 points on 7/10 shooting. Coleman only had eight points but he also was 4/4 from free throw line in the final minute. The two of those guys combined for one turnover. On top of those two the team played great on defense holding Indiana to 4/18 from three and they grabbed 16 offensive rebounds.

I won't want to over-analyze this win too much. It was a huge win, over a ranked team, on the road. It was our first win of the Big Ten season. I'm greedy and I'd like more of them.

I think he means how is that FOR a signature road win

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
If that doesn't work, cheat.

Yes

Welch

I actually like the kid as a point guard, however his work so far this season has to have him in the top 5 for least clutch basketball players of all-time, at any level. Luke Ridnour not far behind. The amount of easy free throws and layups Welch misses in important situations is unbelievable

Must get welch out of the game the last 5 minutes. Absolutely without a doubt.

I am loving Coleman.

The win was delightful. We hit the offensive boards hard and made some really nice mid range jump shots. That coupled with Indiana struggling from the charity stripe and with their 3’s was a nice recipe for a huge win on a national level.

Any given night in this league….you can beat Indiana then lose to penn state at home. Seems everybody is all over the place. I think that’s the new normal for college basketball though. I like it.

And in closing…the more we win, the angrier I grow at the Illinois game!!! Fuck the Illini.

I don't think you can take him out

overall he is an over 80% FT shooter and I cringe when Mav has the ball at the end of games.

He’ll figure it out, with this roster I’d still take my chances with Welch over Mav, Chip or Dre

My thought too.

Here’s hoping he gets out of whatever funk he’s in at the end of games.

That's my bad I mistook 3 point line for charity stripe

…which, if I wanted to try to save face I’d say is a charity stripe this year for Indiana…

But I fucked up. My bad. You are correct.

They way I hear it ...

the Illini scored more points. Deucedly diabolical of them, eh?

It’s really tough to beat a Big Ten team on its home court.

Kudos to the Gophers on a great victory at Indiana!

The lineup

I think the key isn’t so much getting rid of Mav, who played well when Welch picked up two quick fouls and had to sit, as it is keeping Austin on the floor for defense and Joe on the floor for offense.

With the old lineup we had trouble stopping dribble penetration, and Austin is our best on the ball defender.

And Joe’s just earning time by doing everything.

exactly correct. I have always liked the looks of Austin Hollins—-what announcers like to call “glue” players. I love that picture of Rodney on the STribs front page——nice to see the guys with a smile.

Hollins was awful against Iowa

Couldn’t hit a basket all night (2/9 plus 0/5 from 3). Ralph also played terrible that game. They both played much better last night and the result was fantastic.

by DJL44 on Jan 13, 2012 9:04 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

Although with Hollins, he never takes a bad shot and rarely makes bad decisions. He just couldn’t get anything to go in.

I tend not to think of that as playing terribly, but it wasn’t good.

we needed that one

it just might propel to a win at Penn State. Is back-to-back road wins asking too much?

Damn that Illinois game.

Awesome Game....

A much needed win for the players, for Tubby, and the fans. I really like the swagger that Joe Coleman brings to the floor. He still looks a little lost defensively, but doesn’t seem to let that bury his confidence.

Time to put on my over-reaction-super-optimism goggles

We "could" win five of our next six games.

PSU – winable, but PSU has been playing everybody tough
NU – this one scares me but it is at home
MSU – loss
ILL – probably a loss but it is at home
Iowa – guarantee we win this one
Neb – very winable

Realistically this is more like 3-3 but 5-1 wouldn’t be all that crazy. I don’t like how we matchup with Northwestern and Illinois may be more ready for us but let me ride this wave of optimism for a couple days.

5-1 is crazy

Funny how one win can erase the memory of the other 4 games. I agree that those 5 are winnable, but the chances of us playing that well in 6 of 7 games is pretty optimistic. Then again, you are wearing your super-optimism goggles.

Take Them One At A Time

Gophers NEED to be 9-9 or better. That translates to 8-5 or better the rest of the B10 schedule.

I realized that that was a bit of an exaggeration . . . still, 3 nice wins in recent games.

"That coupled with Indiana struggling from the charity stripe ... "

Huhhhhhhh? They were 22-25. They got 30% of their points from the stripe; we got 17%.
We won the ballgame because we played pretty decent defense, hit a reasonable percentage of threes (35% / 6-17) and IU was awful from three for a good-shooting team (22% / 4-18). The big difference in the Purdue games was that they made 700 threes in a row and you cannot beat that.

by DACGold on Jan 13, 2012 9:37 AM CST reply actions

Purdue's 3's were outrageous...

…I agree. I also agree I fucked up the free throw comment. It was 3 pointers.

I still don’t like Welch’s inability to perform with the game on the line. Free throws and a few missed layups. I do’nt trust him. Fine, leave him in the game but it’s just unpleasant to watch. How we almost lost that game last night is almost mind-blowing, except as Gopher fans we’ve seen it 10000 times (like at Illinois).

And GN…I’d say we can win all 6 of those games…and we can lose all 6 by 20 points per game. I’d not be surprised if we won them all or lost them all. Nothing about this team, good nor bad, will surprise me. We’ve seen it all this season, haven’t we?

by jimipig on Jan 13, 2012 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

Welch

Yeah. Not liking him in the line up at the end of a game. Twice now he has failed to ice a game and his defense on the Roth three at the end of the game was like something from grade school. I thought he was going to fly into the stands.

I am blinded, but not by science...

by BlindedByIdiocy on Jan 14, 2012 9:43 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

I enjoyed the two mid-range jumpers

our centers hit around 2-3 minutes left in the game. Those were ballsy and beautiful shots that kept us ahead comfortably.

That is right when we could have crumbled, but didn’t…

by jimipig on Jan 13, 2012 12:39 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, those were great

I am also enjoying Armelin’s improved three point shooting. Lately his performance has been matching his confidence, which makes a big difference.

by amiller92 on Jan 13, 2012 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

Most encouraging sign...

We didn’t totally shrivel up an die when they used the 2-3 zone. It took us a few possessions initially to get going, and as a result, our 29-20 lead vanished pretty quickly. But I thought from there they showed signs of actually having practiced offense for this defensive set. My mind exploded a bit.

Overall, the offense seemed to be a lot more energetic and thoughtful. If that remains a constant, this team will be exciting to watch the rest of the way.
