my gut reaction
I love the Minnesota kids and am blah about the rest of the class. I was really excited about Dinero Moss but for whatever reason he won’t be coming.

I really like Harbson and Maye
but overall they are meh

How many people are on the roster right now, including today's signees?
There’s a person on Twitter to whom I’m trying to respond, who claimed that Minnesota was 10 over the 85 scholarship cap. That didn’t even seem possible considering the Big Ten’s rules, so I thought it would be a good idea to clarify. If Adam Rittenberg is accurate, there are 31 in this class (6 JUCO).

That's off...
…some are grayshirts, some of the early enrollees are counting against last year’s class, and some are preferred walk ons. I think.
FBT says we are right at 85 but I'm not sure how he gets to that number
I took the entire roster and went guy by guy and marking if they are a scholarship guy or not. I could be off by 1 or 2 but I’m not sure who wouldn’t be getting one at this point.

I believe that 28 is the official number
one or two may greyshirt and there is still time for transfers and academic casualties. And most importantly you can count some of the early enrollees as last year.
There are 8 who are currently enrolled in classes, some of them can be counted back to last year. By my counting of scholarship players we could allow 24 with this class. Since then Tom Parrish has transferred so we can sign 25. You are allowed to oversign by 3 as long as you get back to 85 total by next fall.
There might still be a few numbers to work out but we are NOT 10 over. Not even close.

actually 27 have officially signed to be receiving a scholarship
what you say here can, and will, be used against you The Daily Gopher
my count is we are 2 over the 85 limit
and if a couple guys greyshirt then we are set for this year or if anybody else transfers then we are set.

Greyshirting is morally repugnant
That is garbage that Saban and Miles and Petrino engage in to massage the 85 person limit. I hope to god Kill isn’t doing that.
I hope he is....
…gotta do what you gotta do to compete (that’s legal)…
Looking at the Recruiting Roundup dated Nov. 9, it appears that at that time Minnesota had 82 on scholarship minus 14 seniors minus 1 transfer minus 1 to the draft which would leave 19 open scholarships for incoming players. Whereas now, there is room for 25. Have there been a lot of players to leave the program since that Nov. 9th write-up?
I remember being really excited about Clint Brewster...
But seriously…I think the top of the class is great. I think our offensive line has great depth coming in along with last year’s class. Wide Receiver and QB is set for half a decade.
Defense….defense…..that is my question mark which is why I thought Moss would be good here. I still find it very curious that he’d pass up the U for an Iowa fucking community college. There must be more to this story. Grades. Kickbacks….SOMETHING….on the face it’s a big ol’ WTF….not like he said screw it, I’m going someplace warm. It’s fucking Iowa still….the dump that it is….
On a totally different topic, sort of…I love the tension already starting between OSU/Meyer and everybody else…I will enjoy how that plays out.
Moss
Coach Kill talked about JUCO recruiting and “placing” kids in JUCO programs where they had connections. Maybe this is what happened with Moss and what will happen with Nicholson. With the over signing that has already happened this year there was no more room for him on the roster.
I'm guessing there had to be some grade issues
what you say here can, and will, be used against you The Daily Gopher
Probably true
Going off the press conference, he talked very briefly, almost like he was letting a secret out, about hiding kids in the JUCO system and there seemed to be an implication that it happened today. And with how the Moss scenario went down it seems they probably had something to do with him going to that particular JUCO. It would be interesting to see if Nicholson ends up at one of the schools the staff are connected with.
Hinojosa
is my sleeper guy. I hope he becomes completely psychotic and torments QBs.
Reading coach Kill
He got real excited when talking about the 4 receivers, Nelson, Gillum and Boddy. They aren’t talking about moving Leidner to TE at all, which leads me to think they may not be planning on red-shirting Nelson. Camp can always change that though.
The recruiting services still rank our class as last in the B1G. This might be homer speak, but keeping the instate talent and filling the major gaps in the team seems like a success to me.
Is there a video
with Jerry Kill announcing the letters of intent?

Streamed his press conference live a 3pm. Don’t know if they have posted it on Youtube yet.
Missed it.
Hopefully the archive is up soon.

Kill on KFAN now
Kill has one more segment on KFAN in a couple minutes
Not sure we are last
I guess the recruiting services have their own methods of scoring, but here are two media sources that grade us better:
- in the B1G (ahead of Wisconsin): http://yourseason.suntimes.com/home/10372069-401/football-how-the-big-ten-recruiting-classes-shape-up.html
If you're grading
on number of recruits, Minnesota beats Wisconsin.
They certainly don’t win on average caliber of recruit.
They are an offensive coach's
wet dream! Hell yes he got excited.
Punting
What are the chances Max pulls double duty as our punter if we have another horrible start to the punting game.
I love NSD
now if we can just end it with a 15 point win over Iowa!

Beat Iowa Again, Again?
WHO HATES IOWA???
When we get the Pig, the Jug and the Axe, we'll have one hell of a picnic
Us.
I mean, We Hate Iowa!

What do you think this year was different?
The Kids of MN wanted to stay home and build something. Why has this suddenly changed? Has having The Bank and a honest coach really made that much of a difference in the eyes of MN kids? Has coach Kill learned how to sell the program differently than the last 20 coaches?
Perfect Storm
As a player the stadium/locker room/amenities still have that “new car smell”… It won’t last much longer if we can’t fill it, especially the student section.
Local coaches/players want to be part of building something, and this was the first real year of that opportunity. Toss in a fairly-high rated local QB who was able to help sell the program and the excitement from beating Iowa and nearly shutting out Illinois and you have some carryover. And the right kind of talent in-state (combined with no poaching from Wisky and Iowa). We also have to thank Vanderbilt/Illinois for the WR coaching switch. And maybe even thank Wisconsin for the mass coaching changes keeping our recruits here.
I think the instate coaches really want to help Kill and The U. They just couldn’t recommend it in good conscience with a used-car salesman as the head coach.
Extra scholarships, early enrollment all played a part. Next year’s class will have to focus more on need and quality. This year they could use sheer numbers at nearly every position.
It will mean next to nothing though if they don’t improve next season, which means starting by beating the teams we are supposed to beat, staying close to some of the giants, and maybe pulling an upset (and maybe, maybe a bowl bid). Gotta walk before you can run.
