Minnesota Swimming & Diving: Gopher Men and Women Both Grab B1G Weekly Awards

Both swim squads collect multiple awards this week.

The announcement of this week's Swimming and Diving for the Big Ten was full of good news for Minnesota. Both the men's and women's teams picked up awards for Freshman and Diver of the Week.

On the the men's side, the winners were

Daryl Turner received Swimmer of the Week while Manny Pollard was named Diver of the Week. Both accolades were awarded after Minnesota’s winning performance against Arizona State University last weekend Oct. 5, 2013. This was the first Big Ten Weekly award of both Turner’s and Pollard’s career.

Daryl Turner

Turner, a freshman, debuted in his first collegiate dual meet by claiming first-place finishes in all four events competed in. He won the 1oo-yard backstroke (48.43 seconds), 100 freestyle (44.65), 200 freestyle relay (1:23.08), and the 200 medley relay (1:29.27). His 100 backstroke finished with a time that was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

The last Minnesota Swimmer of the Week was Kyler Van Swol on Nov. 6, 2012.

Manny Pollard

Sophomore Pollard placed first in both the one-meter and three-meter dives. He earned scores of 341.70 in the one-meter and 370.65 in the three-meter, both high enough scores to qualify him for the NCAA Zone Diving standards.

The last Diver of the Week was Mikey Ross on Feb. 12, 2013.


On the women's side, the awards went to Breanne Siwicki and Maggie Keefer:

Breanne Siwicki received Freshman of the Week while Maggie Keefer was named Diver of the Week. Both accolades were awarded after Minnesota's winning performance against Arizona State University last weekend Oct. 5, 2013

Breanne Siwicki


Siwicki, a freshman, debuted in her first collegiate dual meet by claiming a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:08.89. This honor marks her first Big Ten Freshman of the Week Award.

The last Minnesota Freshman of the Week was Marina Spadoni on Feb. 12, 2013.

Maggie Keefer


Senior Keefer placed first in the three-meter dive and placed second in the one-meter dive. She earned scores of 321.23 in the three-meter and 293.18 in the one-meter, both high enough scores to qualify her for the NCAA Zone Diving standards. This award was Keefer's 11th Diver of the Week honor in her career, the last earned was Feb. 12, 2013.

11th diver of the week award? That's pretty dominant I guess.

Hats off to Breanne, Maggie, Daryl, and Manny!
