I don't know about you guys, but after watching that Gophers vs. Florida St. game I had a very sour taste in my mouth, and that's AFTER a HUGE gopher victory. I am a diehard basketball fan and love the game of college especially, but after watching what was said to be college hoops on Tuesday, I felt otherwise. This had nothing to do with how the gophers played, in fact, they played with emotion, grit, and a toughness that represented their coaching staff to say the least. What was disappointing was how the game was officiated. I know there are now new rules in college basketball, and boy were they on display Tuesday night. I mean if you gave a High Five to your own teammate it was a foul. All the calls and many of them very poor ones (against both teams) wrecked the flow and pace of a game that I love to watch. However, imagine someone who is on the fence who just "tuned in" to see what was happening at Williams arena. There is NO WAY they would have continued to watch a game in which had nearly a foul every possession down the final 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Now I wasn't actually at the game, so maybe someone can fill me in on what it felt like to see this foul fest live, but watching in TV was a nightmare with the little bumps that were being called. My hope is that it was one game, and that officiating isn't going to be replicated like this throughout the year because of it does, the hoops fan base will decline. Until March anyway. I am heading to the game on Saturday and hopefully I will get to watch real basketball, with real athletes, real refs, and real game flow.
