B1G Ten Hockey Tournament Preview: #6 Penn State

"We're gonna come back here and ring that victory bell. Just like we've always wanted to." - Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

Here's your breakdown of the Nittany Lions, hockey newcomers.

The Nittany Lions are brand new to this big-time hockey thing. They’re young, and they have an obvious talent deficit when they face off against first tier teams. They rank last in the conference in both goals scored per game (2.10) and goals against per game (3.75), so it’s no surprise that they only managed to win three games.

The one thing that Penn State does well is shoot the puck. They average almost 35 shots per game. Unfortunately, due the skill deficit I discussed above, most of those shots are from low value areas on the ice, and they don’t do a good job of cleaning up rebounds. If they were able to create quality scoring chances, they would score more than 2.1 goals per game with that type of shot number.

The highlight of Penn State’s season is their two-game winning streak against Michigan. Even though those two consecutive wins were separated by almost two weeks and two games, but since it was against Michigan, I’m willing to call it a sweep.

Their second bragging point seems to be the quality of their conference opponents, if the official Twitter account is any indication. Don’t bother pointing that their KRACH strength of schedule is pitiful, or you’ll be accused of cherry picking stats.
