Golden Nugz 2.4.11

New, comments

A few morning Nugz for you as you grab your shorts, flip-flops, and suntan lotion in preparation for the heatwave this weekend...temps above freezing!!!

Gophers freshman defenseman Mark Alt passed up college football to play college hockey, and the decision is paying off. He was drafted 53rd overall in 2010 by Hartford Carolina, and he's been one of the U's best defenders thus far. He also made a much better collegiate choice than his dad, former KC Chief lineman John Alt, who went to Iowa.

Roman has a weekend preview of the U's big tilt with #2 Minnesota Duluth in their brand spakin' new rink. Gopher great Glen Sonmor announced yesterday he'll retire as the team's radio color anaylst at the end of the season.

Gopher baseball is holding a "Bottom of the 9th" event tonight at 6pm at TCF Bank stadium as they continue to raise money for a new stadium. The homeless team has no on-campus facility and the Metrodome is roofless. I did hear Twins VP Dave St. Peter on 1500 ESPN earlier this week, who said they're trying to have the Gophs play at Target Field this spring. How sweet would that be? St. Peter said it's not agreed upon yet, but that the schedules of the Twins and Gophers match up perfectly so that the Twins are on the road whenever the U has a conference home series planned. Let's hope that gets done.

Gopher women's hoops did what the men couldn't earlier in the week- beat Indiana in Bloomington.

Next opponent for Gopher hoops is #1 Ohio State Sunday at 1pm. The Buckeyes survived a scare from Michigan last night (I watched a bit of that game, and it just seemed to weird to see anyone but Chris Webber wearing the yellow #4 for the Wolverines. I know, I know, according to the NCAA the Fab Five never existed), so we'll see how the play in The Barn Sunday. Oh, and following that game, there's another game on TV that's apparently a big deal. I hope all of you are doing the right thing and cheering for the Steelers.
