Gopher Football Scholarship Grid

This is a post where I am requesting your help. Below is a matrix of who I believe is on scholarship by position. Now keeping track of exactly which 85 individuals are on scholarship of the 118 players listed on the roster is a bit tricky. The vast majority of the 85 is simple, MarQueis Gray is on scholarship. But when you get down to the last handful of scholarships it gets more difficult. Some guys have seen significant playing time but came into the program as a walk-on, are they now on scholarship? Caleb Bak is a good example of a name that is recognizable as a kid who played and started last year at LG. But there is no official list of scholarships and with kids like Bak it becomes a bit of a guessing game.

The other difficult portion of this roster analysis is getting positions exactly right. Particularly along the offensive line and in the defensive backfield, players switch positions or can play multiple positions. The McAvoy twins are solid examples here. Considering neither has played any meaningful snaps it is really difficult to ascertain exactly what position they should be listed as in a roster matrix like you see below.

So with all of that said below is a grid of what I believe to be the 85 scholarship players currently on the roster, by position and by year. And I would greatly appreciate your feedback on which players I have listed incorrectly (either Y/N on a scholarship or position errors).

First just the number of scholarships by position and by year (without specific names).

Up next is the same matrix with names in their appropriate boxes. A * next to the name indicates that they are a redshirt freshman and a bolded name indicates a predicted starter (some positions are certainly up for debate, I'm just taking an early June stab at it).

With those names now visually in front of us I have a handful of question marks.

Caleb Bak - started four games last year and will likely be on the 2-deep to start the year this fall. He came into the program as a walk-on and until I hear otherwise I'm assuming he does not have a scholarship yet. If you think he has one, then one name from above has to come off the list.

Cameron Botticelli - should see significant playing time along the defensive line. Again, I'm not sure he has been given a scholarship so in spite of his contributions I'm keeping him listed as a non-scholly guy.

A.J. Barker - I'm less worried about having this one wrong as I'm pretty sure Barker is clearly a non-scholarship player.

Aaron Hill - listed as a scholarship guy but began his career as a walk-on. I'm quite sure that Brewster gave Hill a scholarship back in 2010 so I'm making an assumption that his was renewed through the coaching change. This could be an incorrect assumption but I'm going with it until told otherwise.

JUCO DBs - unsure exactly where they will end up playing this fall but I feel pretty confident that Baltazar will be a safety and Shabazz will be a corner.

You tell me what is missing or off. I'm not too proud to admit I am wrong or have a healthy debate about this.
