A jump of 6'10" was enough to win the state meet but the week prior, at regionals, he cleared 7'1"! That mark is the highest in the country this year and is just a couple inches shy of an Olympic trial qualifier!
The state title earned Ellenson Athlete of the Week honors for WEAU.The link has video of Ellenson high jumping and talks a bit about his family, basketball and how he will compete in both basketball and track as a Golden Gopher. It should be noted that the highest jump for a Gopher this season is 6'9" and he would have finished right around 10th or 11th at the Big Ten Championship meet! I think it is pretty clear that Ellenson will contribute immediately on the track and field team.
The more I read about and see Ellenson the more excited I get for what he is going to bring to Gopher hoops. He appears to be a really good kid who is freakishly talented. For a long time I was certain that he would end up redshirting but I am starting to believe that he will play this year off the bench, maybe getting around 10-12 min per game coming in at SF ahead of Oto.
