Semi-intelligent thoughts:
- You must go to a game this season if you have a chance. I had a great time covering the Gopher women this spring and I whole-heartedly recommend seeing them play live. Ridder is small enough, tickets are cheap enough, and the women are good enough where they should be seeing packed houses all season long. We're the State of Hockey, let's support the Gopher women accordingly!
- Do you like hating on Badger sports teams? Well, you'll get your chance early as the Badgers are the non-exhibition home opener. And that weekend (Oct 11-12) is a bye week for football. Unfortunately it's the same days as the Icebreaker Tourney at Mariucci, but depending on game times you might be able to see both. If you can, go for it!
- It looks like the women's team does the same split home/home setup for games against Mankato that the men did. A sign of respect for the women because to my knowledge that setup was always in place as a favor to allow Mankato to draw more fans (i.e. make more money) on Saturday night.
- On a bummer note, the home series against UND (11/16-11/17) is also on a home weekend for the men (Mankato). DISLIKE split attention spans but that's how it goes.
- Interesting scheduling quirk, as the Gophers bookend both sides of the December holiday break with series against Ohio State.
Football will dominate the conversation in the coming months (HOORAY FOR FOOTBAWWW!) but there is definitely a part of me that can't wait for the puck to drop on the women's (and men's) hockey seasons.
