I...I don't even know what to say right now...from Bleacher Reports's recap of SummerSlam last night's Gopher Football practice.
Confetti fell from the sky and pyro exploded on the scoreboard. Leidner thanked his parents and the feel-good moment of the year was unfolding before our very eyes.
Then it happened.
"Jesus Walks" played and Philip Nelson emerged from the tunnel, the Money in the Bank (brought to you by TCF Bank) briefcase in his grasp. He teased using it, cashing it in for his guaranteed QB competition match then and there. But then he thought better of it. He began walking to the locker room, then stopped and looked over his shoulder.
Suddenly, Coach Jerry Kill delivered the Pedigree heard 'round the Gopher Football world to Mitch Leidner and Nelson stepped onto the field. He handed Kill the briefcase, Jerry blew his whistle and, seconds later, Nelson captured the starting job that Leidner had worked so very hard for.
Coach Kill and Mankato Jesus stood tall to end the evening's festivities.
And just like that, Philip Nelson will be the starting quarterback for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers against UNLV next week. An absolutely shocking turn of events.
Ok, so it was a little less dramatic than that:
Gophers coach Kill confirmed after Tuesday's practice that Philip Nelson would be the starting quarterback for the Aug. 29 opener against UNLV – not that there was any doubt.
Mitch Leidner will be the primary backup, with Chris Steveler the No. 3 option and Donovahn Jones shifted to wide receiver.
I kid mostly because like Joe C notes, this move was never in doubt. I mean Kill has to announce the starter at some point I guess but I'd assumed it would be Phil since, I don't know, January? So seeing this made "official" was a bit entertaining, especially when schools like MSU still have open competitions with FOUR QUARTERBACKS STILL VYING FOR THE JOB. (snicker)
So for now, it looks like I can retire the #QBGAZE2013 minion.
I love you man, so don't take it personally when I say I hope we don't have to see you again for a few seasons.
With the QB "competition" settled, what position do you wish the coaches would clear up by announcing a starter for?
