From 1987 - 27 Years Ago - Foggie, Thompson Carry Minnesota to 5-0 The tandem of Rickey Foggie and Darrell Thompson carried Minnesota to a 45-33 victory at Northwestern 27 years ago today. Foggie amassed 405 yards of total offense, while Thompson carried the ball 23 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Foggie finished with 136 yards on the ground with a score while throwing for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Their performance helped the Gophers over 295 rushing yards by the Wildcats' Byron Sanders, the brother of NFL Hall of Famer Barry. Twice during the fourth quarter, Northwestern pulled to within five points. The first time, Thompson responded with a 61 yard touchdown. The second time, Foggie scored from 71 yards out with just over a minute to play to seal the win. Foggie and Sanders shared Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors. Minnesota's 612 yards are the fifth-highest total in school history. Did You Know? Minnesota remained unbeaten on the year with the win, the program's first 5-0 start since 1960.
