Big Ten Football Power Poll: Week 7

Top four stay the same, but the middle is shifting again

Matthew Holst

As a member of the "working media" we get requests to help out other "media" in their articles and pursuits.  Then sometimes we get to steal their ideas and content for our own gain.  Thus, we bring you the Big Ten Power Poll!

I am a voting member in two power polls this season on other websites.  If you want to compare my votes to other "writers" from around the Big Ten, I'm sure they would love a click as well.  Check out the Rutgers Blog www.SalSoothsayer and another blog covering the whole conference,

Here is the poll after week 4:

Big Ten East

1. Michigan State

Purdue gave them a bit of a scare, but the Spartans pulled away in the end.

2. Ohio State

It was an easy bye week for the Buckeyes with no worries about moving down a spot.

Moving up two spots on a bye week?  Well Penn State looked that bad, and I valued thier loss to a good Ohio State team too harshly last week.

4. Rutgers

Sorry to drop you on a bye week, but still think Maryland is just a bit better than you.

5. Penn State

Yes, you beat the team above you.  You also played like crap last week against Michigan.  You may have peaked allready.  Not good.

6. Michigan

A nice win over a dropping Penn State team to get out of the cellar,  You may need to win one more to move up further.

7. Indiana

Poor Tevin Coleman.  Man you are getting screwed.

Big Ten West

1. Nebraska

No bye week drop here.  I just can;t homer myself enough to move Minnesota up just yet.

The Gophers did what they needed to do to stay here for at least another week.

3. Wisconsin

You beat Illinois.  Not exactly a huge achievement this season.

4. Iowa

Who was running your offense this week, cause is wasn't the usual characters.  You could have moved above WI here, but I'll wait to see how do you against the Terps this week before doing something rash.

5. Northwestern

You played a good game against the Gophers, but it wasn't good enough.  Can you get revenge on Nebraska for last year this weekend?

6. Purdue

You looked better than anyone thought against Michigan State last Saturday and now your fans are getting all cocky.  Ask Northwestern fans how that worked last weekend.

7. Illinois

Firmly planted.  Might as well get comfortable.

In case you are a pre-divisions purist, and want to see how teams stack up overall, here is my overall Top 14:

1. Michigan State  NC

2. Ohio State        NC

3. Nebraska      NC

4. Minnesota   NC

5. Wisconsin      +2

6. Maryland    +3

7. Iowa            +3

8. Rutgers     -3

9. Northwestern -1

10. Penn State      -4

11. Michigan      +3

12. Purdue       NC

13. Indiana        -2

14. Illinois         -1

The top four stayed the same, but with Iowa's big win and Maryland getting upvalued we had some middle shifting again.   This week will once again move some things around with Iowa or Maryland dropping, and Rutgers getting their chance against the Buckeyes.
