It wasn't just the Gopher Football team that got a victory, was a busy and exciting weekend for all of the non-revs too! Read on for Volleyball, Soccer, Swimming, and much, much more!
Going into last weekend the Gophers were ranked #50 after plummeting from 18 the week before and had a 11-4 (B1G 1-3) record. Like the previous weekend, the games this weekend would both be over in three straight sets, but this time with much better results.
Game 1: Friday, 10/10/2014 vs. #106 Maryland - Sports Pavilion @ 7:00 pm CST
The Gophers got off with good start winning the first set 25-15. Maryland showed some backbone in the second set but the Gophers still won 26-24 followed by a 25-17 final set. Junior star #1 Daly Santana led the way with a team high 16 kills, .500 hitting, and tied for team best with 8 digs. Tied with Santana for digs was #8 Sarah Wilhite (SO), an young player who has had a great year so far. Leading the team in blocks as true frosh #13 Molly Lohman with 6 (BA) blocks. #3 Katie Schau (SO) lead the team with 37 assists. Read the official Gophersports.com recap here. Note, the official recap introduced the Gophers as #23 but the official NCAA ranking I have seen listed them at #50 going into this game.
Game 2: Saturday, 10/11/2014 vs. #131 Rutgers - Sports Pavilion @ 7:00 pm CST
A dominating performance, especially in the first set which the Gophers won 25-8 followed by 25-17 and 25-21. Santana and Schau led again with Kills (15) and assists (29) respectively. #7 Hanna Tapp (SO) led the Gophers in hitting with an impressive .600 while also leading in blocks (3 BA). #5 Alyssa Goehner (FR) Read the official Gophersports.com recap here.
The Gophers are now at 13-4 (B1G 3-3) and have risen slightly in the rankings to #43. Maryland has fallen to #114 while Rutgers is up despite the loss to #128. Minnesota with their 3-3 record is in a 5-way tie (NW, MI, MSU, IN) for 7th in the Big Ten while there are 4 teams (PSU, OSU, IL, NB) ahead of them in a tie for 3rd with a record of 4-2. Purdue leads the Big Ten with a 6-0 records with Wisconsin just one game behind at 5-1. Maryland & Rutgers are tied with Iowa for last place with 0-6 records.
This week features a home/away series with #6 Wisconsin (14-2, 6-1). Without a doubt the Badgers will prove to be a tough challenge but the Gophers do have a chance. Last year the Badgers and Gophers split the series with both teams winning at home 3-1 but the year before the Gophers won both games. Wisconsin was the NCAA Tournament runner-up last season and they have a senior heavy team this year (2 RS SR, 5 SR, 1 RS JR, 2 RS JR, 3 SO, 1 RS FR, 1 FR) so they bring plenty of experience. Two of the Badgers hail from Minnesota; #11 Kt Kvas (SR - Eagan, MN) and #14 Dominque Thompson (RS SR - Robbinsdale, MN).
Game 1: Wednesday, 10/15/2014 vs. #6 Wisconsin - Sports Pavilion @ 6:00 pm CST

Game 2: Saturday, 10/18/2014 @ #6 Wisconsin - Madison @ 7:00 pm CST

The Gopher soccer team had a very good showing this weekend with two victories and a B1G Ten Player of the Week award. Going into this weekend Minnesota was ranked #72 with a 6-6-1 (B1G 3-3-1). They faced at #76 ranked Nebraska and a #51 ranked Illinois squad.
Game 1: Thursday, 10/9/2014 vs. #76 Nebraska - ELR @ 7:00 pm CST
In terms of score, this game was the most lopsided of the Minnesota's Big Ten season so far, luckily in the Gophers favor. Minnesota won this game by a score of 3-1 on the strength of two goals by #13 Taylor Stainbrook (JR). Nebraska actually scored first at 30th minute but Minnesota would equalize just before half at the 42nd minute on a goal by #11 Josee Stiever (SO) on an assist by #2 Simone Kolander (SO). Kolander would deliver another assist early in the second half at the 50th minute when Stainbrook scored her first goal of the season off of a Kolander pass. Stainbrook would get her second goal of the season shortly afterwards off an assist by #17 Rashida Beal (SO) in the 67th minute to put the game out of reach. Game 2: Sunday, 10/12/2014 @ #51 Illinois - Champaign, Ill @ 2:00 pm CST
This game proved to be more of a challenge in a game that went into double overtime, the second game to do so this year; three other games went into single overtime. The first half was a back and forth affair in which the ball never found the back of the net; there was no shots on goal for the first 18 minutes. The second half got off to a fast start for the Gophers when Stiever scored her 4th goal of the season off an assist by #6 Katie Thyken (SR) in the 50th minute. The rest of the half was quite until just before time expired and Illinois scored in the 87th minute on a penalty kick taken by Janelle Flaws, the reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Neither team was able to score in the first overtime but #43 Taylor Wodnick (SR) needed only 20 seconds of the second overtime to win the game for Minnesota off an assist by Kolander. With this victory, the Gophers are 3-1-1 in overtime games this year. Read the official Gophersports.com recap here.
For her efforts last weekend, Josee Stiever was named co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. With these two victories, the Gophers are now ranked #60 with their 8-6-1 (B1G 5-3-1) record with only 3 games left, all home games, giving them an excellent change to move up in the Big Ten standings, in which they are currently 5th. Nebraska fell to #86 (12th B1G) while Illinois took fell to #70 (8th B1G).
Like the Volleyball team the Soccer team gets to take on Wisconsin this weekend, but unlike the Volleyball team they only have to face them once.
Game 1: Friday, 10/18/2014 vs. #15 Wisconsin - ELR @ 7:00 pm CST
Let's make this a homecoming weekend by attending this game to watch the Gophers #GiveEverything; they will need it seeing as Wisconsin is 15th in the nation. While Wisconsin has only one more Big Ten victory than the Gophers, good for 4th place in the Big Ten, they have four more overall victories. Last year this was a great game with the Gophers getting a double-overtime victory in Madison, scoring the loan goal of the game. Minnesota also won the year before at home in a 3-2 game; you can bet the Badgers will want to change the outcome this year.
The rowing team headed to Rockford, IL for the Head of the Rock meet on Sunday (10/12/14), its first Division 1 meet of the year, and had a strong showing. In the Collegiate 4+ race, Minnesota's A boat just edged out a Wisconsin's A boat to take 2nd place, just behind Wisconsin's B boat. Minnesota's B boat finished in 6th. In the Collegiate 8+ Minnesota finished with a 3rd, 6th, and 8th finish (Wisconsin was 1st & 2nd). Read the Official Gophersports.com recap here.
Minnesota travels to Boston for one of the largest rowing events in the world, the Head of the Charles regatta. This event will take place on Sunday, October 19th, 2014. Guess who will be there too; yup, Wisconsin.
