Today was Big Ten Media Day for both the Gopher Mens and Gopher Womens Basketball Teams. The Big Ten announced that Rachel Banham was named the Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by both the Big Ten Coaches and Big Ten Media.
Banham is coming off of a junior season where she was a unanimous All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and media. She med the Big Ten in scoring with a 22.1 points per game average. She set single season Gopher records for points in a season (750) and three-pointers made in a season (93).
She needs just seven points this season to be only the fourth Gopher player ever to record 2,000 points, and needs only 292 points to break Lindsey Whalen's career scoring record of 2,285 points. Additionally she is on pace to set an additional five career records at the U.
In addition to Banham's recognition, Amanda Zahui B was named to the Big Ten Media Preseason All-Big Ten team. Zahui B averaged a double-double with 15.1 points and 11.6 rebounds per game in route to winning the Big Ten Freshman of the Year Award in 2013-14. She set both the Big Ten and Gopher record for rebounds in a season with 394.
The Gophers will start their season November 14 at home against Southeastern Louisiana in the first game for new coach Marlene Stollings.
