Preseason Award Gophers
Golden Gophers senior David Cobb is on the Doak Walker Award's preseason candidates list, announced Thursday. The award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
Last fall, Cobb became the first Gopher since 2006 to surpass 1,000 yards rushing. His 1,202-yard season total ranked 12th in program history and 27th in the nation in 2013. He also tied for the team lead with seven touchdowns.
Cobb eclipsed 100 yards in six games, including a four-game streak during Big Ten play. He rambled for a career-high 188 yards on the ground as part of his 236 all-purpose yards in a win at Indiana.
This is good to see. I certainly don't expect Cobb to win this award, but he definitely did well enough last season to have earned a spot on the watch list. With any luck (ok, with a run heavy offense that will feature the Golden-I and a hopefully improving passing game), he'll get the chance to stick around until the Top 10 are announced. Even if that doesn't happen, I'm looking forward to watching David Cobb this season.
