Minnesota Football: Gophers Receive Votes in Preseason 2014 Coaches Poll

New, 15 comments

Minnesota received 6 votes in the initial 2014 Coaches Poll, the first preseason votes for the program since 2009.

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

The preseason Amway USA Today Coaches Poll was released this morning, with your favorite college football team receiving some votes. Six, to be exact.

Minnesota is slotted to play three preseason Top 25 squads this season: #6 Ohio State, #14 Wisconsin and #22 Nebraska. Under teams receiving votes, the Gophers are scheduled against TCU (54), Michigan (53), Iowa (49) and Northwestern (5).

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Ohio State is joined in the Top Ten by Michigan State at #8.

While the validity of preseason rankings is up for debate (538 used preseason rankings from the AP and Coaches as a covariate in its 2014 NCAA Tournament predictor, mostly as a proxy for talent), I see this as a sign of respect from his fellow coaches -who already hold him in high esteem by all accounts- of where he's brought the program. This is the first time since 2009 Minnesota has received a preseason vote in the Coaches Poll.

Thoughts on the rankings, or about preseason rankings in general? Share them in the comments!
